Hardcover. Condition: Good. Two volumes. Ex-library. Volume one, text; volume two, portfolio of plates. Ex-library, Zen Center Library, San Francisco, with typical pockets, markings, stickers, stamps, etc. Paging: xvii, 316 pages: frontispiece (portrait), 1 illustration; 26 cm + portfolio of 85 plates. (The portfolio is complete as issued, containing a total of 87 leaves. While the sequence is numbered 1 through 85, the set includes two additional plates to account for sub-divided entries: 4a and 4b, 82a and 82b.) The primary English-language study of the 7th-century Buddhist murals in the Kondo (Golden Hall) of the Horyu-ji temple in Nara, Japan. The work analyzes the murals' iconography and their synthesis of Indian, Central Asian, and Tang Chinese artistic traditions. This book serves as a critical historical record because the original murals were severely damaged by a fire during conservation work in 1949. The high-quality photographs and detailed diagrams in this 1943 edition document the paintings in their pre-fire state, providing information that was lost in the incident. Condition is good only. Set has seen use. The case housing the portfolio of plates is a bit battered and the interior hinges are weakening and card-stock torn in places. The plates are not fresh and crisp. The one flaw worthy of special note is a 3-inch tear to plate 83.
