Karl Ewald Hasse war 1839 außerordentlicher Professor der pathologischen Anatomie in Leipzig geworden, wurde 1844 nach Zürich als medizinischer Direktor der Kantonalkrankenanstalten und Professor der medizinischen Klinik und Pathologie berufen und lehrte später als ordentlicher Professor für spezielle Pathologie an der Medizinischen Klinik Heidelberg und in gleicher Stellung in Göttingen, wo er als Direktor der Medizinischen Klinik bis 1878 tätig war. Bennett war langjähriger Präsident des Royal College of Physicians.
