Sheet Music First Edition
Sydney Leff (illustrator). Original large-format sheet music edition featuring a striking Jazz Age cover illustration by noted commercial artist Sydney Leff (1901-2005), one of the most prolific and influential American sheet-music illustrators of the 1920s. Printed in bold blue, gray, and orange tones, the cover depicts a melancholy fireside interior scene with inset publicity photograph of vaudeville performers Lewis and Smith. This issue also includes a ukulele arrangement by May Singhi Breen ('The Queen of the Ukulele'), reflecting the immense popularity of fretted-instrument accompaniment during the height of the 1920s ukulele craze. Rear cover advertises the Irving Berlin title Yearning (Just for You) by Benny Davis and Joe Burke. Condition: Very Good. Light age toning and moderate handling wear consistent with use and age. Mild edge wear, several tiny edge tears, and small corner creases; no major losses or detached leaves. Interior music pages remain clean and fully legible with strong paper integrity and no substantial staining or notation. Cover colors remain bright and attractive, especially uncommon for a 1924 popular-music issue printed on inexpensive stock. Presumed first edition / early commercial printing, 1924. Copyright statement on interior music page reads 'MCMXXIV by Irving Berlin, Inc., 1607 B'way, N.Y.' Original Irving Berlin imprint, period advertising, and the contemporary May Singhi Breen ukulele arrangement are all consistent with a first-year commercial issue intended for home performance and phonograph-era sales. Sydney Leff became one of the defining visual stylists of Tin Pan Alley publishing during the Jazz Age, producing hundreds of highly recognizable covers characterized by elegant elongated figures, theatrical interiors, and bold flat-color lithographic design. His work for Irving Berlin and related New York publishers remains especially sought after by collectors of American commercial illustration and music ephemera. Benny Davis, Joe Burke, and Mark Fisher were major contributors to interwar American popular music. Joe Burke later composed enduring standards including Rambling Rose and Moon Over Miami, while Irving Berlin's publishing house represented one of the dominant forces in Tin Pan Alley music production during the 1920s.
