Small octavo. 5 x 7.5 in. 322 pp. Good in original cloth boards with gilt titling and frontispiece, boards mildly sunned, particularly the front panel with some fading to gilt, chipping and loss to head of spinal extremities and webbing exposed at hinge, and front interior hinge cracked. Signed "with author's compliments" on title page with facsimile signature stamp. Superintendent James Bent is known for his work attempting to solve the murder of Constable Nicholas Cock, as well being responsible for the creation of a soup kitchen in Manchester in the 1870s.
