Hardcover. Condition: Poor. No Jacket. Born in Austria of Russian parents, Walter Benton lived most of his life in the United States. After working on a farm, in a steel mill, as a window washer, as a salesman, and at various other jobs, he entered Ohio University in 1931, and in due course was graduated. He then spent five years as a social investigator in New York. During the second World War he served in the United States Army, being commissioned a lieutenant of the Signal Corps in the autumn of 1942 and later being promoted to a captaincy. After the war he returned to New York and devoted his time to writing. This Is My Beloved, the remarkable diary in verse that has become one of the most popular books of poetry, was his first published volume, though his work was already familiar to readers of Poetry, Fantasy, the Yale Review, and the New Republic. Never a Greater Need, a second selection of his poems, was issued in 1948. Walter Benton died in 1976. Former library book. Has been repaired by replacing the spine and meanding the hinges. Book Condition: Good; light shelfwear to board edges; light soiling to boards; moisture stains on board bottom edges and water marks 1" up the page bottom edges; no adherent pages or smeared print. DJ: Good; NOT Price Clipped ($2.00); light soiling to panels; light shelfwear to head, tail, and tips; small missing pieces at top of front panel. Green cloth over boards with tan overlay on the spine with brown lettering on the spine and front and rear boards. Clean internals. Inner hinges are sound and not split. Deckled fore edge and bottom edge. 43 pp 8vo. This book is a popular book of poetry known for its honest and rhapsodic depiction of young love and physical intimacy, written in a diary-in-verse style. The work, which was controversial at the time for its frankness, draws on Benton's diverse life experiences and became one of the most widely read poetry collections. This book of poetry was written for Lillian in a diary entry form from April 28 to Nov 25. A clean presentable copy in a Brodart mylar jacket.
