Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. viii, 301 pages : illustrations ; 34 cm. Hardcover in slip case. Wear/chipping to slip case with minor loss. Good binding and cover. Printed by Hans Mardersteig in Verona, Italy. Limited ed. no. 820 of 1500 copies, signed by the illustrator, Fritz Kredel. The Limited Editions Club was founded in 1929 by George Macy with the intent of publishing beautifully illustrated and designed classic literature for a relatively small number of subscribers. Much of the LEC's fame stems from its use of some of the best illustrators and artists available. Each title was uniquely designed with individualized paper and cover materials. This is an oversized or heavy book that requires additional postage for international delivery outside of Canada and the US. Benvenuto Cellini was a Florentine sculptor, goldsmith, and writer. He was one of the most important Mannerist artists and, because of the lively account of himself and his period in his autobiography, one of the most picturesque figures of the Renaissance. Signed.

Florentine sculptor, famous for his work as a goldsmith and for his autobiography. Written between 1558 and 1562 and first published in 1730, it is one of the most celebrated autobiographies in history. It gives and intimate and lively picture of the life of the times and of the author's vivid and arrogant personality. Goethe was so fascinated by it that he translated it into German. Cellini was a pupil of Michelangelo and for a time was attached to the court of Francis I of France, for whom he made his best known piece, a gold salt cellar.

The Limited Editions Club signed limited edition of this autobiographical account by the Italian Renaissance sculptor, goldsmith, and writer Benvenuto Cellini. Quarto, bound in full modern morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe / Zaehnsdorf with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, gilt ruling to the front and rear panels, all edges gilt, gilt turn-ins and inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, with black and white illustrations. Boldly signed by illustrator Fritz Kredel on the colophon page at the rear. One of 1,550 numbered copies, this is number 161. In fine condition with sunning to the spine. Translated from the Italian and edited by John Addington Symonds. Introduction by Thomas Craven. Illustrated by Fritz Kredel. The Life of Benvenuto Cellini is a remarkable Renaissance autobiography that offers an unvarnished, highly personal account of the life and mindset of one of Italyâs most talented and tempestuous artists. Written in Italian between 1558 and 1566, Celliniâs narrative presents himself as a fiercely independent sculptor and goldsmith whose artistic genius is matched by his volatile temperament and defiant individuality. Through detailed descriptions of his works, travels, and interactions with powerful patronsâ"including popes, kings, and dukesâ"Cellini constructs an image of the artist as both heroic and self-sufficient, embodying the Renaissance ideal of creative autonomy.

[iv], 442, [1] pp, illustrated with color plates and full page line drawings. Bound in publisher's blue buckram stamped in gilt and blocked in black on the spine, top edge gilt; lacking the slipcase. Near Fine with light toning covers and contents, trivial mottling to rear cover. Binding square and strong, plates clean and bright. The Renaissance sculptor and master goldsmith Benvenuto Cellini is known as much for his Autobiography as for his art. Self-aggrandizing and partly invented, the memoir is a well-written and highly entertaining addition to the Western canon. Both Cellini's artwork and his posthumously published autobiography influenced the Surrealist artist Salvador Dali, who more than matched the Renaissance man in bravado, famously writing in his own autobiography: "Every morning upon awakening I experience supreme pleasure: that of being Salvador Dali, and I ask myself, wonderstruck, what prodigious thing will he do today, this Salvador Dali.".
