Slight bumping to spine and corners, boards a little bowed and edges dust-marked, otherwise good copy with no inscriptions. Unclipped DJ worn and soiled with splits to flyleaves and 3" loss to spine. Size: 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Book.

Stephen Baghot de la Bere (illustrator). 1st Thus. f/piece+xxxvi+106+unfolding map+ (2, pub.notices of 4 other books on Spain), uncut bttom and fore-edges, 12 further ills; tanning to inner sides of endpapers and outer sides of following leaf otherwise internally clean, tight and unmarked. White gilt-letteredcloth covers surprisingly clean and unworn, front with 7 blind-stamped borderlines, heraldic gilt motifs in each corner plus gilt lettering as has spine, just one small brown spot to front. Title page has a further lengthier sub-title.

Hardcover without dust jacket, vi + 207 pages, plus "twelve full-page illustrations in colour---" (of which only eight are present, and one of them is torn across, but all bright and colourful); covers rubbed, moderate shelf wear to all edges, traces of faded old staining, but tight in binding although cracks are starting inside, both endpapers and all pages preceding title page have been removed, light to moderate foxing on roughly a third of the pages, but all pages otherwise clean and unmarked.

Hope" was a pseudonym for Robert Hope Moncrieff, a prolific Scottish writer of books and magazine stories for children. A major attraction of the book are the twelve color plates "from drawings by Stephen Baghot de la Bere". The top edges are gilt, others untrimmed. The covers are rubbed, affecting the illustrations blocked on spine and upper cover, there's a bookplate on front endpaper, one color plate is partly loose, and there is a little browning and spotting on edges. Still a very good copy with all plates looking splendid.
