This is echoed on the flap itself by Rexroth's blurb " The only word for the Akhmatova poems is amazing.Berg has done a magnificent job of 'method' - completely projecting himself into the other person. Condition: Very good plus overall. First Edition. Inscribed first trade edition and publisher's proof of Stephen Berg's meditations on the work of Russian poet Anna Akhnatova, with Stanley Plumley's notes to rear. It is evident based on Berg's inscription that Plumley had seen an earlier draft of what would become WITH AKHMATOVA AT THE BLACK GATES. Evidently, Plumley found the "final form" inspiring, underlining resonant lines and writing verses at the rear. A nice association copy, with proof. 8'' x 5.25'' (book); 8.25'' x 5.5'' (proof). Original green and white pictorial wrapper. xii, 68 pages. Inscribed by Berg to half-title page, "For Stanley / with much affection & / admiration - / & the hope that / he can bear to read / this again, in its / 'final form.'" Some pen underlining throughout text, with longer notes by Plumley to inner rear wrapper. Proof with green wrapper, two hole punched and metal band bound, with clipping about the book tipped on. Proof with a hint of edgewear, clipping coming a bit loose. Book with light edgewear, mild sunning to spine. Hinges a touch brittle. Firm. Signed.

Bound into Curtis paper covers by Denise Brady and produced at the Nebraska Book Arts Center. A near fine copy, with only issue being a small chip in the centre of the spine. Unusual to find signed and this copy has a signature and inscription on two places, making it more unusual. Flat signed on the title page and then inscribed on the colophon page; "For Albert with thanks - "live happy!". Very collectable copy, rare signed with a warm inscription. Provenance, from the Library of noted bibliophile and Updike collector Albert J Raman. Signed.

A few pages have 1 or 2 spots of foxing and slight toning on covers. Near fine jacket with small tear on back flap and some toning as well. Still with the original glassine jacket. A very collectable copy and hard to find signed, at the time of listing no other signed copies available. Signed.
