Pehr Erik Bergfalk (1798-1890) var jurist och ekonom och som sådan historiskt orienterad. Han studerade för Geijer i Uppsala och kom att omfattas av socialliberala idéer. Under 1840- och 50-talen var han aktiv i utarbetandet av förslag till författningsreformer och var även aktuell för regeringsuppdrag. Denna bok är en omarbetning av "Skall guldåldern komma", som författaren utgav tidigare samma år. Guldet behandlas ur ett historiskt och nationalekonomiskt perspektiv, och de nuvarande guldresurserna inventeras varvid Kalifornien och Australien visar sig ha den största produktionen.
