"In Southern Africa the 19th century saw the rise and fall of the mighty Zulu empire, and the breaking away of Shaka's warrior…, Mzilikazi, to forge his own powerful Ndebele (Matabele) nation in the interior. During the Difaqane, marauding tribes like the 'Mantatees' led by the Tlokwa warrior queen Mmanthatisi scattered more peaceful peoples and cut a swathe of destruction and suffering across the sub-continent. A wise chief named Moshweshwe built a new Basotho nation with diplomacy and courage, while in the south the Xhosa-speaking tribes - who had been the first to come face to face with the Dutch and the British - struggled to keep their independence. A complex century of colonisation has been admirably analysed and condensed to provide a highly readable and informative overview of a crucial area in South African history. A series of freshly drawn maps further clarifies a history concerned with the shaping and breaking of many different nations and empires.
