Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. A unique item due to it's profuse marginalia, dated around the 1840s, including detailed illustrations, many in colour. [2]+386pp.+32pp.+xv index. Rebound at some point in burgundy boards with brown hessian spine cloth. Front hinge cracked after title page; remaining firmly bound. The contents are very lightly age toned with only the very occasional spot of foxing. Almost every leaf contains marginalia, mostly pencil, often numerous entries per page, these being a variety of species sightings with dates (1840s), specific notes around the descriptions, extra information brought in from other sources (often cited), some notes on contradictions, and drawings showing a good level of both skill and understanding, with varying levels of detail, in either pencil or a colour medium. There are also a number of slips of paper tucked in at appropriate places with extra notes and drawings, and others containing species lists. A small number of dried leaf specimens showing fungal activity are tucked inside. See photos. A delight for any fungi collector.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Volume I only. Full leather with gilt title on spine; gilt ruled borders; dentelle. Spine scuffed; corners lightly worn. Starting crack to inner front hinge. Marbled endpapers. Armorial bookplate on front pastedown. Interior is clean with some occasional light foxing. pp. [2], (3)-271. A volume of letters by Anne Berkeley (c. 1707-1786), wife of philosopher Bishop Berkeley (George Berkeley), addressed to Adam Gordon (c. 1745-1817). The matter includes her arguments against the free-thinkers, who here husband also attacked, and references Shaftesbury, Hume, Voltaire, Bolingbroke, and Rousseau. In addition to addressing various theological and philosophical matters, Anne largely waxes upon the importance of Christian education and morality. According to the Berkeley scholar Stefan Gordon Storrie, Anne's correspondence here started around 1764, when Anne was approaching her sixties and Adam Gorden was still a young man. Volume I is divided into two parts: [a] the Preface by the editor, Rev. Adam Gordon, Rector of Hinxworth, which is dated December 18, 1790; and [b] 31 of the 41 letters by Anne Berkeley. [For reference, Volume II, which is not offered, included [a] the final ten letters by Anne, [b] the ''Anniversary Addresses from a father to his son, on his birthday,'' by Adam Gordon, and [c] ''Six letters to a Lady of Quality,'' by the historian and Christian mystic, Nathaniel Hooke.].

First edition, 4 vols., small 4to (245 x 200 mm), printed titles and indices, 350 original mounted specimens of Fugi, with printed labels, volumes 1 and 2 contemporary morocco-backed boards (one cover detached, worn), volumes 3 and 4 publisher's boards, one lacking spine. A remarkable work in the of mycology, providing a visual and physical record of British fungi. Miles Joesph Berkeley (1803-1889), a Church of England clergyman and naturalist and to be later known as 'the father of British mycology'. He contributed the section on British fungi to Sir James Edward Smith's 'The English Flora' which was published in 5 volumes from 1824 to 1836. Here he presents the dried specimens which he had described in Smith's work. For obvious reasons fungal exsiccatae are much rarer than other species of the genus and complete set are seldom meet with. This being the only complete set to appear at auction in the past 70 years. Provenance: Andrew Fountaine library; the library of Michael Walpole (1933-2009), founding member of the Loughborough Naturalists' Club.
