Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 340 pages. Published in 2007. Book-length account on subject. One of the most valuable books on American music and culture ever written in our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run by Random House as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Wilfrid Sheed's "The House That George Built: With A Little Help From Irving, Cole, And A Crew of About Fifty". The Golden Age of American music, not just American Song. Preceded only by Irving Berlin, George more or less created and solidified the House, along with an astonishing gathering of musical genuises, a "high-point" feat never to be repeated in American history. Which "embodied all that was cool, sexy, and sophisticated in popular culture. For four glittering decades, geniuses like Jerome Kern, George Gershwin, Cole Porter, and Harold Arlen ran their fingers over piano keys, enticing unforgettable melodies out of thin air. A dazzling, authoritative history of the era that tripled the world's total supply of singable tunes. It all began when immigrants in New York's Lower East Side heard Black jazz and blues, and it surged into an artistic torrent nothing short of miraculous. George Gershwin, in his brief but incandescent career, straddled Tin Pan Alley and Carnegie Hall, charming everyone in his orbit. Half a century later, Gershwin love songs like 'Someone To Watch Over Me', 'The Man I Love', and 'Our Love Is Here To Stay' are as tender and moving as ever. Sheed also illuminates the unique gifts of the great jazz songsters Hoagy Carmichael and Duke Ellington, conjuring up the circumstances of their creativity and bringing back the thrill of what it was like to hear 'Georgia On My Mind or 'Mood Indigo' for the first time" (Publisher's blurb). "Far and away, our greatest contribution to the world's art supply during the so-called American Century" (Wilfrid Sheed). An absolute "must-have" title for Wilfrid Sheed and George Gershwin collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed and inscribed in red ink-pen on the front free endpaper by the author: "For Gale - Cheers, Wilfrid Sheed". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Wilfrid Sheed's shaky-looking handwriting has always been like that, idiosyncratic in its own way, and NOT a sign of old age or arthritis. The recipient, who is named, was personally known to the British-born, American immigrant-author. This title is a contemporary classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed and inscribed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and despite its imperfection (slight crimping on the bottom hard board corner, but it's there) is still in especially fine condition: Every single internal page is clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online have very serious flaws or are in subsequent printings. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. One of the most brilliant critics of the 20th century and our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO MICHAEL FEINSTEIN "THE GERSHWINS AND ME" TITLE IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 1400061059. Signed by Author.

Condition: Very good. April 11, 1945., 1945. Very good. - Over 250 words typed on his personal 10-1/2 inch high by 7-1/4 inch wide embossed watermarked linen stationery. Irving Berlin writes to Bob Sidney, the choreographer of his important World War II musical "This Is the Army", concerning new music he created for the show's tour of the Philippines. He writes that "I hope all went well in Mendora [Mindora] and that the new number is working out.As I wrote you from Leyte, unless this number is a riot, I wouldn't keep it in. Another spot may help, but I still feel the number is too slow." Berlin had introduced his new song, "Heaven Watch the Philippines", during a ceremony in Leyte in March of 1945, singing the song with a chorus of Filipino girls and the cast of the play "This Is the Army". He wrote the song as a tribute to the Filipino people and their resilience during World War II. In his letter to Bob Sidney he expresses his concern that the song will be misunderstood. "I am really concerned about the Philippine song especially when you play Manila and the rest of the tour through the Philippines. I hope Shanley [Pvt. Robert Shanley] got away with the announcement. If not, someone else should explain the song. It makes much more sense with an announcement. I would also try to get some children for every performance as we did in Leyte. In any event, the shows you play in Manila should have the children for every performance." Signed in full "Irving Berlin". Folded for mailing with some light creases. Near fine. Originally composed as a Broadway Musical, Irving Berlin's "This is the Army" was staged as a morale-boosting revue to raise money for the troops. The musical opened on Broadway on July 4, 1942 during the Second World War with a cast consisting of 300 uniformed soldiers. The show was so successful that it was followed by a national and international tour, playing in the European, Far East and Pacific Theaters of War. Irving Berlin designed the show so that he could insert new songs depending on the location of the performances. "My British Buddy" was composed for the English performances and "Heaven Watch the Philippines" for Pacific Island shows. The song "Heaven Watch the Philippines" was written as a tribute to the Filipino people's resilience during the war and as a benefit to aid in the recovery following the war. Dedicated to General Douglas MacArthur, Berlin sang the song with a chorus of Filipino girls and the cast of the musical in a presentation ceremony in Philippine city of Leyte in March 1945. He subsequently donated the song to the country with proceeds to go to the Boy & Girl Scouts of the Philippines. The Russian-born American composer and songwriter Irving Berlin (1888-1989) wrote an estimated 1,500 songs, including scores for 20 Broadway musicals and 15 Hollywood movies. His music forms a large part of the Great American Songbook. The American choreographer Robert Sidney (1909-2008) was self-taught as a dancer. He made his Broadway debut in "On Your Toes" in 1936 and appeared in George Balanchine's "Keep Off the Grass". Assigned to the Special Services Division during the Second World War, he was the principal choreographer for Irving Berlin's musical "This Is The Army" and was later involved in the movie version starring Ronald Reagan. He choreographed many Broadway shows and worked with Bing Crosby, Rita Hayworth, Nancy Walker, Jackie Gleason, Cyd Charisse, Debbie Reynolds and Mitzi Gaynor. He also went on to work in television, choreographing for "The Dean Martin Show", television versions of musicals, and 4 Academy Awards shows.

The recipient, George Rose was a regular patron of the Ritz Bar which gained a reputation over the years for its glamorous cocktail parties and the unique bartending skills of Frank Meier, a head barman from 1921 until his death in 1947. One of his best-known cocktails was the potent "Rainbow", consisting of anisette, mint, yellow chartreuse, cherry brandy, kümmel, green chartreuse and cognac. ÂDesigned in the Victorian style with red-velvet armchairs and bar furnishings, a marble fireplace and historic portraits, The Ritz Bar may have been the world's first hotel bar and was frequented by celebrities and writers including Judy Garland and Ernest Hemingway. First Edition. First Edition. Association copy, INSCRIBED on the second front endpaper by Irving Berlin: "To / Dorothy Hechtlinger / with my best / Irving Berlin." A scarce promotional songbook issued by Twentieth Century-Fox in connection with their successful 1938 musical film "Alexander's Ragtime Band." Dorothy Hechtlinger was Twentieth Century-Fox studio head Darryl F. Zanuck's script coordinator from 1934 to 1945, described by later biographers as an "indispensable" part of Zanuck's team. Although uncredited in the 1938 film, Hechtlinger would likely have been intimately involved in the screenwriting process. The songbook contains piano transcriptions of three new songs written for the film-including "Now It Can Be Told," "My Walking Stick," and "Marching Along with Time"-as well as 25 other songs written by Berlin. Very Good plus in wrappers, with light wear to the spine ends and a small chip to the bottom corner of the front wrapper. Signed.

Hardcover. Thick quarto (8-7/8" x 11-3/4" x 3" thick) in a plastic-enclosed black pebbled leather 3-hole binder containing 194 vintage pieces of sheet music by Irving Berlin, likely all reprints, specially compiled and arranged alphabetically with a special contents page bound at the front. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the composer on the front endpaper: "For Rosemary and Earl Wilson/with love from/Irving Berlin -- 1981." A privately compiled effort exclusively produced and supervised by Irving Berlin during his twilight years, likely only for his closest friends. We are aware of the existence of only one other copy, that belonging to Harold Arlen. Earl Wilson was one of the best known gossip columnists of his day and an authority on Broadway and show business. He often interviewed Berlin, including the well-known interview in December 1953 about HOLIDAY INN when Berlin told Wilson: "But the public liked 'White Christmas' and it became a runaway. You see, a war song doesn't have to be about wars. This is really a peace song." Wilson and Berlin were longtime friends maintaining a 35-year correspondence. Signed page a bit wrinkled not affecting Berlin's writing. Near Fine and possibly unique.

First Edition. A Composer's Archive: Irving Berlin's Personal Songbook Presented to Leslie Bricusse, with 1969 Letter Referencing Roger Eden BERLIN, Irving. Songs by Irving Berlin. New York: Irving Berlin, n.d. Thick folio (12 x 9 inches; 305 x 229 mm.). A remarkable compilation of nearly 200 individual musical scores, gathered and bound into a substantial volume. Specially prepared in black cloth, covers and spine lettered in gilt, all edges gilt, housed in a protective clear jacket. An imposing and evidently custom-assembled anthology of Berlin's principal songs. Binding strong and handsome; inscription bold; letter well-preserved with original folds. A superb, museum-worthy ensemble. Provenance & Association: Inscribed by Berlin to Leslie Bricusse: "For Leslie Bricusse / with all good wishes / from / Irving Berlin." Accompanied by an exceptional typed letter signed (TLS) on Berlin's stationery, dated March 28, 1969, addressed to Bricusse at his Beverly Hills residence. In it, Berlin explains his decision to send this bound volume rather than individual songs, and adds a warm compliment on Bricusse's score for Goodbye, Mr. Chips. Crucially, Berlin notes that he had earlier sent a copy of the same book to Roger L. Eden of Broadcast Music, Inc. - a revealing detail that firmly establishes the present volume as a purpose-assembled professional reference copy, circulated among leading figures in the music world. The association places this example within a rarefied network of composer-to-composer and composer-to-publisher exchange. Contents & Dating: The volume comprises a sweeping retrospective of Berlin's career, from early Tin Pan Alley successes (Alexander's Ragtime Band, 1911) through his great Broadway and Hollywood years, including later works such as There's No Business Like Show Business (1946) and You're Just in Love (1950), establishing a terminus post quem of 1950 for the compilation. It represents, in effect, a working archive of Berlin's canon, assembled late in his career. Significance: A powerful artifact of 20th-century musical history: Berlin - the defining architect of the American Songbook - here acknowledges and encourages Bricusse, one of its most accomplished successors. Association copies linking composers of this stature, with substantive correspondence referencing both the object itself and contemporary work, are of the highest desirability. The reference to Roger Eden further elevates the piece, situating it within the inner professional circles of music publishing and rights management. Signed.

Letter. On a sheet of his personal stationery (7" x 10") addressed to Michael de Lisio of MGM Pictures, Berlin answers an inquiry about a rumor, prevalent since the 1920s, that his songs had been written for him by an anonymous black boy. In full: "The little colored boy story that MacLane talks about is probably the Harry Ruby one. Some years ago, I walked into the Friar's Club with a three months Palm Beach tan and Harry Ruby, who was in the club, pointed to me and said 'there's the little colored fellow who writes all of Berlin's stuff.' Another Ruby crack about the colored fellow was -- Sometime ago, a songwriter asked Ruby how old the little colored boy was and Harry replied 'oh, about Irving's age.'" SIGNED by the composer "Irving Berlin." With a short typed statement by the recipient of the letter stating that he was working at the time for MGM in charge of publicity for EASTER PARADE. Accompanied by a letter of provenance from Mary Ellin Barrett, and a photocopy of a newspaper article about Barrett and her relationship with her grandfather.
