Measuring 4.25" x 6" on a 7.5" x 9" piece of glossy paper. Light foxing on front, verso toned, with four pieces of tape where it was once taped into a matte, very good. Most likely a plate from a book or a keepsake. Facsimile signature and title beneath. Perfect inspirational portrait to pin on the typographer's studio wall.

Two ink check marks found in fore-edge margins of pages 4, 7, and 40 - no others readily apparent but might be found upon a more careful perusal; interior pages are otherwise clean. Binding is firm. Front wrapper notes, "On the occasion of the Civil War Centennial we are proud to offer these two prints of Abraham Lincoln and Robert E. Lee. reproduced from original wood engravings by the eminent American artist, Bernard Brussel-Smith." Inside facing pages contain striking two-tone (black and tan, giving a sepia appearance) engraved portraits, Lincoln at left and Lee at right. Two laid in leaves (rectos only) feature facsimiles of the original Hartford Fire Insurance Company policies issued to Abraham Lincoln (1861) and Robert E. Lee (1859). Brussel-Smith (1914-89) was a New York artist who in his heyday of the 1940s and '50s was considered America's foremost wood engraver. From the library of noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar Arnold Gates (1914-93).

A Midsummer Night's Press was founded in New Haven CT in 1991 Hand-printing on a letterpress, it published broadsides of poems by Nancy Willard, Joe Halderman, and Jane Yolen, among others, in signed, limited editions of 126 copies, numbered 1-100 and lettered A-Z. In 1993, the publisher moved to NY and the press went into hiatus. Given it's short life time we have been unable to determine how many copies of this broadside made it into circulation.

One of America's leading wood engravers, known for his scenes of the urban working classes in the 1940s and '50s. Signed First Day Cover, 6½" X 3½", cancelled in Buffalo, New York on 1977 August 4 and with "First Day of Issue" boldly stamped. Single 13-cent "United States & Canada Peace Bridge 1927-77" stamp at upper right and handsome ArtCraft engraved cachet at left. Near the center, in blck ballpoint, Brussel-Smith signs. A classy example of this artist's virtuoso wood engraving technique -- and an uncommon autograph.

One of 100 copies, Advertises an exhibition held at the Fairleigh Dickinson University Library on the Florham-Madison Campus in Madison, New Jersey, celebrating the American wood engraver Bernard Brussel-Smith, widely known for his posters of the New York Auto Shows of the 1950's and 1960's. The broadside features a large portrait print of Brussel-Smith which is typical of his direct style through the use of heavy black lines. Very attractive.

Brussel-Smith, who was born in Greenwich Village in 1914, became one of America's foremost wood engravers. His work is held in numerous permanent international collections and museums.
