Reprint. 240pp. Theologia Germanica is a 14th-century mystical treatise, attributed to an anonymous author, that emphasizes the union of God and man through a path of perfection, as exemplified by Christ, renouncing sin and selfishness, ultimately allowing God's will to replace human will. It was rediscovered and published by Martin Luther, who found it influential in his theological views. The present edition includes a substantial introduction by Joseph Bernhart that has been divided into the following five parts: Mysticism - The Word and the Concept; Mystical Testimony; The Essence of Mysticism; The Sources of the Theologia Germanica in Medieval Mysticism; and The Theologia Germanica. It has been revised and modernized from the 19th century translation of Susanna Winkworth, and is based on the version in modern German by Joseph Bernhart, which reconstitutes the original in its entirety, restoring omissions that date back to Luther. The book is bound in the original blue cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with light bumping to the top corners and spine ends. The contents are tight and clean with an inscription on the front free endpaper. The clipped dustwrapper has shelf wear with some soiling and bumping to the top corners and spine ends. There are nicks at the top of the spine and small tears on the top and bottom spine corners and a dent with a small tear on the rear spine edge. There us a little red staining near the bottom of the front of the wrapper and a few small red spots on the back.
