Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. FIRST PRINTING of First Edition 1984. Original green cloth with gilt lettering spine and small gilt decoration lower spine. The book has minor soiling covers, some puckering of the cloth near the spine areas, some cloth puckering lower covers (mainly near middle of botto…m rear cover), no owner marks or writing on any pages, no foxing, a little splitting rear inside hinge (about 6cm but hinge quite strong), solid binding. The book measures 242mm tall x 163mm and has 529 pages, many b/w photos and illustrations, 11 maps and charts (several historical, 4 are folding), index. PHOTOS ARE OF THE ACTUAL BOOK BEING OFFERED.

(library copy from the University of Cape Town, with small sticker on spnine, ex-libris and small stamp on title) Joseph Elzéar Bernier (1852-1934) was a Canadian mariner. "From 1904 to 1911, he explored the Arctic Archipelago on annual voyages in his ship the CGS Arctic and officially claimed the islands for Canada." (Wikipedia). The Inuit fondly called him Kapitaikallak, 'stout, little captain'. Most photographs show local people, and are among the earliest pictures of the Inuit.
