Première édition d'un des premiers ouvrages de Jakob Bernoulli (1654 - 1705). Il contient une explication et un élargissement de la théorie des tourbillons de Descartes et tente d'expliquer la cause de la gravitation et de la capillarité. Bernoulli a été parmi les premiers à développer le calcul au-delà du point où il avait été laissé par Newton et Leibniz. Il était à la fois cartésien et newtonien et a beaucoup contribué à la diffusion des idées de Newton en Europe. Certaines recherches de Jacob, autrefois considérées comme des curiosités, trouvent aujourd'hui des applications pratiques dans la construction de ponts suspendus et la transmission de hautes tensions (voir Printing and the Mind of Man, 179). Bernoulli a étudié les mathématiques et l'astronomie. Il a voyagé dans toute l'Europe de 1676 à 1682, s'informant des dernières découvertes en mathématiques et en sciences. Il s'est familiarisé avec le calcul grâce à une correspondance avec Gottfried Leibniz. Tome 2: Caspari Bartholini Thom. fil. L'anatomiste danois qui a laissé son nom au canal de Bartholin et aux glandes de Bartholin était issu d'une longue lignée de médecins de grande renommée. Son grand père, Caspar dit l'Ancien était anatomiste et théologien tout comme son père, Thomas. Caspar Bartholin dit le Jeune naquit, pour sa part, en 1755. Nommé dès l'âge de 19 ans par le roi professeur de philosophie, il fit ses premières leçons d'anatomie et de Physique à Copenhague en 1677 avant d'obtenir le titre de docteur l'année suivante. Caspar Bartholin dit le Jeune fut à l'origine de deux découvertes qui portent son nom: - le canal de Bartholin de la glande sublinguale - les glandes de Bartholin de la la femme, situées au niveau du tiers postérieur des grandes lèvres et dont les sécrétions incolores et lubrifiantes facilitent la pénétration du pénis lors des rapports sexuels. Le médecin danois renonça à l'enseignement en 1701. Nommé assesseur du consistoire en 1690, procureur général en 1719, député aux finances en 1726, il montra dans toutes ses fonctions un zèle certain qui lui vaudra de recevoir ses lettres de noblesse en 1731. Caspar Bartholin dit le Jeune est mort le 11 juin 1738.
