Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Paris, Christophle Lambin, 1669 (in colophon: 1768). Second enlarged edition. 4to (210 x 152 mm). [VIII], 152 p. Brown sheep, gold tooled. On the covers a borer of a decorative roll. In the centre a lozenge shaped ornament composed of many curly tools. Spine with 5 raised bands. Allcompartments with a central fleuron and curly corner tools. Paste downs with comb marbled paper. End bands of blue and white silk. Edges sprinkled red. 6.500 Second enlarged edition, more interesting than the first because of the survey of prices of pearls and diamonds in chapters XVII and XVIII (p. 130- 138), and the "Suite du chapitre de la perle" (p. 74-90) dealing with South America. The first chapter attempts to reconcile differing views of various writers, as cited by Berquen, on the origin of gemstones and precious metals, with following chapters taking up the principal gemstones, and some minor ones, as diamond, sapphire, topaz, ruby, spinel, emerald. The chapter on pearl is augmented with an appendix which recounts the history of Spanish conquest in the New World and additionally gives remarks on pearl fisheries, natural history, and production. The chapter on gold and other metals, is also enlarged (p. 111-120) by remarks on the merits of gold and other metals, and by the comments of the celebrated alchemist Nicolas Flamel (d. 1418) on the philosopher's stone and alchemical attempts to transmute metals, but the book is a very sound and sober attack on the believers in transmutation. -Provenance: Name in pen on title page: "De Centrigtizen"? Literature: Sinkankas, vol. I, 593; Sabin, 4957; Duveen, 71; Goldsmith 1921; Palau, 28340. -Condition: Lacks the portrait; Small pinhole wormhole in lower blank margin; Inner margin of the title page lacks some fragments; Biding some small "epidermures", small hole in the upper cover, corners a bit bumped; head damaged; Three holes of the original stabbed binding in inner margin.

First Edition
4to. (8 1/2 x 6 1/4 inches). [12], 112pp. Engraved portrait of Anne Marie Louise D'Orleans. Expertly bound to style in 18th-century French calf, spine with raised bands, gilt tooled, red morocco lettering piece and 18th century marble endpapers Rare first edition of this rare work on precious stones and pearls found in the East and West Indies, including a section on pearl fishing in the Persian Gulf, complete with the portrait often lacking. "The first chapter attempts to reconcile differing views of various writers, as cited by Berquen, on the origin of gemstones and precious metals, with following chapters taking up the principal gemstones, and some minor stones such as diamond, sapphire, topaz, ruby, spinel, emerald, amethyst, aquamarine, hyacinth, opal, chrysolite, iris, vermeille, garnets, carnelian, turquoise, quartz varieties, pearl, coral and amber are discussed, and lastly, a chapter on gold and silver" (Sinkankas, p. 97f). Dedicated to "La Grande Mademoiselle" Anne Marie Louise d'Orléans, Duchess of Montpensier and niece of Louis XIII, with her finely engraved portrait by L. Boissevin, This early treatise on the subject includes a chapter dedicated exclusively to pearls: "on pesche les perles en divers endroits du monde. Sinkankas 592; Sabin 4957; Brunet VI, 4780; Graesse I, 348; Ferguson II, 295 (note); JCB(3) III:51-52; Alden and Landis 661.

Sabin, 4957; Palau, 28.340; Penney, p.59; Goldsmith, 1921; Duveen, 71. One of the most interesting works about precious stones and jewelry. This second edition is more interesting than the first of 1661 because, it is enlarged with a "current price" for diamonds and pearls and with the chapter "contre la fausse Pierre Philosophale et souffleurs d Alquemie" and a "Suite du chapitre de la perle" which relates to South America (Palau II, 194). Robert de Berquen was a goldsmith merchant based in Paris. "In terms of substance, this edition is considerably superior to the first; both are rare" (Sinkankas). Beautiful edition dedicated to the Grande Mademoiselle, Duchess of Montpensier, "sole daughter of Gaston d'Orléans and Marie de Bourbon", born in 1627. It is illustrated with her portrait drawn by Larmessin in 1664 enhanced with her pearls necklace. The unusual presence of a morocco binding on this book, the even rarest one of the fleurs de lys decorating the spine of the volume, the heart pierced with an arrow in the center of the covers responding to the dedication where the author begs Mademoiselle to consider the rarity of things contained in this book and "le c?ur de celuy qui la luy présente"?, the autograph signature of the Police Lieutenant of Louis XIV, Nicolas Gabriel de La Reynie, allow us to consider this copy as a Present of the author to the Grande Mademoiselle. Provenances: La Grande Mademoiselle, Duchess of Montpensier, born in 1627; Gabriel de La Reynie, first General Lieutenant of Police of Paris (1625-1709) and Madam the Duchess of Vendome.

4to. (8), 152 pp. With engraved portrait frontispiece of Anne Marie Louise d'Orleans and numerous pretty woodcut initials and tailpieces. Contemporary richly gilt calf, gilt dentelle central cover decoration showing the Sacred Heart of Jesus, gilt spine on five raised bands (upper spine-end and corners repaired). Marbled pastedowns. Second, enlarged edition of this rare work on precious stones and pearls found in the East and West Indies, written by a Parisian "marchand orphèvre" in Paris and first published in 1661. Both editions are dedicated to "La Grande Mademoiselle" Anne Marie Louise d'Orléans, Duchess of Montpensier and niece of Louis XIII, with her finely engraved portrait, which is here more delicately executed (by Nicolas de Larmessin, in 1664). The large chapter devoted to pearls and pearl fishing cites the Gulf and several specific places there as among the main locations of pearl fishing: "on pesche les perles en divers endroits du monde. (p. 68). This chapter is here "augmented with an appendix which recounts the history of the Spanish conquest in the New World and additionally gives remarks on pearl fisheries, natural history, and production [.] New chapters comprise Ch. 17, on the pricing of diamonds according to size and quality, and Ch. 18 on pricing of pearls. In tems of substance, this edition [the second one, here offered] is considerably superior to the first; both are rare" (Sinkankas p. 97f.). It is these new, additional chapters in particular for which this second edition is sought after: "Du prix des Diamans" and "Du prix des Perles", as well as one entitled "Raisons contre les chercheurs de la Pierre Philosophale & souffleurs d'Alquemie. - Lower spine-end and corners somewhat bumped, otherwise fine. A good copy in an appealingly decorated contemporary French binding. - Sinkankas 593. Duveen 71. Sabin 4957. Brunet VI, 4780. Graesse I, 348.

Couverture rigide. Condition: Bon. Brunet, VI, 262; Graesse, I, 348; Sabin, Bibliotheca americana, II, 105; De Bure, La Vallière, I, p. 69.
