Berret, a Democratic presidential elector for the Second Congressional District of Maryland. In it, he argues that the Democratic party has historically been the party of the people, and he urges his audience to support Grover Cleveland and Allen G. Thurman in the upcoming presidential election. Berret begins his speech by discussing the history of the Democratic party, from its founding by Thomas Jefferson to the present day. He argues that the Democrats have always stood for the principles of democracy, equality, and economic justice. He contrasts the Democrats with the Republicans, who he argues have been the party of big business and the wealthy. Berret then goes on to discuss the issues of the 1888 presidential campaign. He argues that the most important issue is the tariff. He believes that the high tariffs imposed by the Republicans have hurt the American economy and that they should be lowered. He also discusses other issues such as civil service reform and the national debt. Berret concludes his speech by urging his audience to vote for Cleveland and Thurman. He believes that they are the best candidates to lead the country and that they will represent the interests of the American people.
