Berris Conolly.Berris Conolly left work as a commercial photographer in 1984, and from 1985 to 1991 was mainly occupied with two major documentary projects in Hackney and Sheffield, both of which have been published by Dewi Lewis.The photographs in Field Trips were made during occasional breaks from the demands of these projects. They take us to all corners of Britain and explore a wide range of landscapes, urban and rural. They encompass both the beautiful and the mundane.For Berris there was generally no conscious or formal theme to the project, other than to record what caught his attention. However, in Wales he followed the 12th century circular route described by Gerald of Wales, accompanying the Archbishop of Canterbury on his recruitment campaign for the partly successful Third Crusade. The photographs in Field Trips were made during occasional breaks from the demands of these projects. They take us to all corners of Britain and explore a wide range of landscapes, urban and rural. For the 1988 Untitled Gallery Sheffield Project Berris Conolly decided to focus primarily on the industrial heartland of the Lower Don Valley, which had become a scene of partially cleared brownfield sites and ongoing demolition. The project culminated in 1991 with a major exhibition, timed to coincide with the staging of the World Student Games in Sheffield, and which featured the work of all the photographers. It was shown in several galleries across the city. A retrospective show of the work is now scheduled for exhibition at Weston Park Museum in Sheffield. In 1988, Sheffield's `Regeneration project launched: a 3 year project of photographic commissions to document the significant changes taking place. Berries Conolly focused on the industrial heartland of the Lower Don Valley, an area of partially cleared brownfield sites and ongoing demolition.
