Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Popular Depression-era sheet music for the romantic ballad "(You Took My Heart) What Did You Do With It?", written by the celebrated Tin Pan Alley songwriting team of Bert Kalmar (1884-1947) and Harry Ruby (1895-1974). The song was introduced by Kate Smith, whose powerful radio broa…dcasts and best-selling recordings made her one of America's most recognizable vocalists during the early 1930s. The striking Art Deco cover features a photographic portrait of Smith framed by bold blue geometric design elements characteristic of commercial music publishing of the period. Interior pages include piano/vocal arrangement with ukulele chord diagrams and a decorative rear advertisement for "Ev'ry Day Can't Be a Sunday." Condition: Very Good. The bifolium has cleanly separated at the fold, leaving the individual sheets loose but complete, with no paper loss. Light overall toning consistent with age, modest edge and corner wear, and a faint horizontal surface mark on the front cover. Music dealer stamp for Shattinger's, St. Louis (1876-2013) appears on the front cover. Pencil chord and performance annotations appear on the music pages but do not obscure the notation. Rear cover remains attractive with only light wear. A sound, complete copy suitable for collectors, musicians, or display. First edition, first printing, published by Remick Music Corp. in 1931, as indicated by the copyright statement (MCMXXXI) on the music pages. No evidence of a later reissue is present. Bert Kalmar and Harry Ruby were among the most successful songwriting partnerships of the interwar era, producing standards for Broadway, Hollywood, and vaudeville, including songs for the Marx Brothers' films and numerous stage revues. While Kate Smith is now most closely associated with "God Bless America," in the early 1930s she was one of radio's biggest stars, and publishers frequently highlighted her introduction of new songs to drive sheet music sales. The surviving Shattinger's Music dealer stamp also provides a tangible link to one of St. Louis' long-established music retailers, illustrating how nationally published songs reached regional performers and homes across America. Photo of the former Shattinger's storefront is for interest and context only, not part of this item.
