The French text was written by Ludovic Halévy and later revised by Hector-Jonathan Crémieux. The work, first performed in 1858, is said to be the first classical full-length operetta. Delphine Ugalde, née Beaucé, (born 3 December 1829 in Paris, died 19 July 1910) was a French soprano originally taught by her Mother.
