Octavo, orange cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, 204 pp. Fine, in a Fine, mylar protected dust jacket. Recent American literature is a survivors' literature, suggests Warner Berthoff in this summary characterization of American writing since the Second World War.A chapter looking back to Henry Miller in prose and Wallace Stevens in poetry as major forefunners of these postwar developments leads to final questions of where and how, for literature, the creative impulse can still find effective expression. Literature, Critique, American Literature.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. 351 pages, with index. From the author's library, with his marginalia. Essays written in 1957-1970 on modern literature, history, and works by Muriel Spark, Iris Murdoch, Emerson, Melville, Sarah Orne Jewett, Edmund Wilson, Malcolm X, Norman Mailer. Several shorter pieces (book reviews) form another chapter. The author writes in the preface, "The essays in this collection were written for a variety of occasions and were not meant to form a single continuous argument. . . . The unity I would claim for the collection is in a certain reasoned attitude toward, at once, the phenomenon of 'literature' and the practical obligations of those who have to do with it." 8vo, brown cloth. Two copies without dust jackets are available, both with light shelf wear and rubbing to boards. Copy A is frayed at the heel. Prof. Berthoff's notes and/or underscoring are in pencil in a small neat hand, on approximately 50 pages and the rear pastedown of Copy A. Copy B has an old price in pencil on the front free end paper and marginalia/underscoring in ink by a previous owner on approximately 20 pages; also, the author's marginalia in pencil on approximately 15 pages.
