Original Pictorial Wrappers. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Les Grands Naturalistes Francais; 245 pages; Contents clean and secure in original pictorial wrapper with colour illustration of Buffon seated in a garden setting. 30 illustrations hors-texte Chapter titles: Buffon - Home d'Affaires; Buffon au Jardin du Roi (1739-1788); La Pensée Religieuse de Buffon; Une Lettre Inédite de Buffon à Guyton de Morveau à propos de phlogistique; La Génération des Etres Vivants d'aprés Buffon; L'article des Chiens dans l'Histoire Naturelle; Buffon d'aprés Ses Portraits; Lettres Inedites de Buffon; Essai de Bibliographie. Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707 1788) was a French naturalist, mathematician, and cosmologist. He held the position of director at the Jardin du Roi, now called the Jardin des Plantes. Buffon's works influenced the next two generations of naturalists, including two prominent French scientists Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and Georges Cuvier. Buffon published thirty-six quarto volumes of his Histoire Naturelle during his lifetime, with additional volumes based on his notes and further research being published in the two decades following his death. Ernst Mayr wrote that "Truly, Buffon was the father of all thought in natural history in the second half of the 18th century". Credited with being one of the first naturalists to recognize ecological succession, he was forced by the theology committee at the University of Paris to recant his theories about geological history and animal evolution because they contradicted the biblical narrative of creation.
