Manuscript / Paper Collectible
Condition: Near Fine. Angelo Bertini and Vicenzo Mochetti (illustrator). A beautiful example of a visually exciting Grand Tour costume souvenir. No publisher given. 16mo. 11.5 by 8 cm. Including title, 31 panels each with hand-colored plates depicting the generally highly colorful, even flamboyant, garb of the peasantry, trades people and street scene of Rome and its environs. Such leporellos or accordian-style costume booklets were popular souvenirs from the Grand Tour, the counterpart costume leporello of the eccleisiastic garb of the Vatican being unquestionably the more common keepsake. The same basic costume illustrations that appear in this and other such leporellos were also printed in a more standard book form, which would also have been a larger format. That said, there is something especially irresistible about the leporello format. Because these leporellos were diminutive in their size and were undoubtedly treated as ephemeral souvenirs, surprisingly few survive, and there are only two holdings of this one listed on OCLC First Search, one in Italy and the other at the Library of Congress. Also, we would note that usually one doesn't see such Grand Tour concertinas -- the ones from Rome -- with a publication date or the names of the artists, as one does here. The slipcase has a moderate amount of soiling and rubbing of the edges, the outer cover of the concertina, less so, but not entirely free of soiling, especially in the demi-lune cut-out created for ease of pulling the leporello out of the slipcase. The pull tab along the end side of the title panel -- a feature one doesn't generally find in these Roman costume concertinas -- had a linear stain on both sides. Otherwise, the concertina is essentially clean, with very trivial soiling and wear. The colors of the illustrations jump off the paper with their brightness and vibrance. Leporello. Boards with moire paper pastedown. Slipcase with matching papers.
