dj. First English Language Edition. 8vo, Original boards with dustjacket. 140 pages. illustrated with a portrait of Brecht and his wife by Ernst van Leyden. 19 x 15 cm. In English. This Holocaust-era play consists of seventeen of the twenty-eight scenes of Brecht's chronicle "Fears and miseries of the third reich." It gives a description of Hitler's New Order in Germany in the 20th century. "Fear and Misery of the Third Reich (German: Furcht und Elend des Dritten Reiches), also known as The Private Life of the Master Race, is one of Bertolt Brecht's most famous plays and the first of his openly anti-Nazi works. It premiered on 21 May 1938 in Paris. This production was directed by Slatan Dudow and starred Helene Weigel. The production employed Brecht's epic theatre techniques to defamiliarize the behaviour of the characters and to make explicit the play's underlying message. The play consists of a series of playlets, portraying National Socialist Germany of the 1930s as a land of poverty, violence, fear and pretence. Nazi antisemitism is depicted in several of the sketches, including 'the Physicist', 'Judicial Process', and 'the Jewish Wife'. It was followed by many more plays that were openly anti-Nazi (Arturo Ui, etc.) and attempted a Marxist analysis. They were written while Brecht was in exile in Denmark and were inspired by a visit to Moscow, where he experienced the growing significance of the anti-Nazi movement there." Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: None, As Issued. Special Edition. 1st Printing. 150 pages. Published in 1963. The author's succinct account on subject. One of the most valuable books on the art and achievement of Western drama ever written in the 20th century. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, of which there are many as well as Print On Demand. Published in a tiny first print run as a Hill And Wang "Drama Book" hardcover mini-book by FSG. For a book of specialized interest, it has never been out-of-print, and is the author's most celebrated achievement. There is NO ISBN. The First Edition is now rare. Without DJ, as issued. NOT Print On Demand, as listed by ABEBooks' subhuman AI morons. Presents, in its true first format, Lionel Abel's "Metatheatre: A New View of Dramatic Form". Radically asserts, even insists, that tragedy is dead, has been dead for thousands of years, along with the demise of foundational Greek civilization. Since Racine and Shakespeare, we have always had a "not-tragedy" dramatic form that we have not properly NAMED, "tragedy" having such prestige among playwrights and audiences alike. So Lionel Abel helpfully gives us one: Metatheatre, the serious dramatic form that owes an immeasurable debt to Greek tragedy, but is not itself tragedy. The crucial difference between Sophocles and Shakespeare is not the role of fate in human lives, but what moderns have sometimes called "agency". Which, in essence, is self-consciousness. Oedipus never had it - and so was victimized and destroyed by forces beyond his control. Hamlet had self-consciousness - and to an extreme, excruciating degree: Thinking, ruminating, pondering, plotting, scheming, then pulling back in order to think some more whether "to be or not to be". As such, Hamlet is the first full-fledged "intellectual/philosopher" character of Western drama, the man of thought rather than a man of action. Unwilling until the very end to act, he too is defeated by forces that destroy him and those around him. But unlike Oedipus, he is fully aware of the destruction that is about to be unleashed because HE is its primary agent. He is "agency" as ultimate destroyer because "agency" is, in the end, susceptible to a terrible fate albeit consciously. Hailed upon its appearance as perhaps the most insightful analysis and appreciation of Western drama, the book has had an outsize and enduring impact and influence on ALL subsequent thinking about the theatre. Lionel Abel was himself a playwright, producer, stage director, actor, translator of European drama (notably, Sartre), and drama critic; his engagement with theatre was at the highest level of personal commitment imaginable. It is not possible to think about theatre today without taking into account his masterly little book. An absolute "must-have" title for Lionel Abel and theatre collectors. This title is a great book. As far as we know, this is the only copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing (Hill And Wang) available online and despite its imperfection (visible wear with age) is still in near-fine condition: Every single internal page remains clean and unmarked. Please note: ALL other copies available online are subsequent editions or Print On Demand as the book has never been out-or-print. A rare copy thus. One of the greatest intellectual/writers of the 20th century. A near-fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER LIONEL ABEL TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). no.…
