"Pleistocene Changes in the Fauna and Flora of South America" (published in Science, 1971), challenged the long-held belief that tropical regions remained environmentally stable during the Quaternary. Instead, biological and geological data reveal dynamic shifts. The paper revolutionized historical biogeography by challenging the long-held assumption that the tropical regions of South America had remained ecologically stable for millions of years. Before this work, scientists believed that while Eurasia and North America suffered massive glacial disruptions during the Pleistocene epoch, the South American tropics remained largely unchanged. Vuilleumier demonstrated that South America was actually highly unstable and deeply impacted by climatic shifts. Instead of ice sheets, the main drivers of change in tropical South America were alternating dry (arid) and wet (humid) cycles. Vuilleumier's paper served as a crucial springboard and synthesist piece for the "Refugia Hypothesis" (pioneered around the same time by ornithologist Jürgen Haffer). By providing comprehensive biological data on both high Andean montane birds/plants and lowland fauna, she offered a unified explanation for why South America, particularly the Amazon basin, possesses such an extraordinarily dense wealth of biodiversity today.
