Jean Besly naquit près de Niort en 1571. Ses études le menèrent à Poitiers et Toulouse et il embrassa la carrière d'avocat. Il fut même député aux Etats Généraux de 1614. Mais sa relative célébrité vient de son grand oeuvre qui est sans conteste l'histoire des Comtes de Poictou et ducs de Guyenne auquel il consacra toute son existence. Il poursuivit quarante années durant ses recherches : avant lui, l'histoire des comtes de Poitiers était à peine connue, tout n'était que confusion et chaos. Il fut le premier à établir la chronologie et la biographie des comtes de Poitou. Son récit, naïf et pittoresque, rappelle souvent la manière de raconter de Froissart. La mort l'emporta à l'âge de 72 ans (1644), et c'est son fils qui se chargea de l'édition de l'histoire des Comtes de Poictou en 1647. L'actuelle édition est la troisième qui reprend, à l'identique — mais entièrement recomposée —, celle réalisée en 1840 par le libraire-éditeur Robin à Niort pour le compte de la Bibliothèque Poitevine. …
