The author has tirelessly compiled a list of species, both terrestrial and aquatic, that have been found since the last catalog was written in 1855. The author's work is not simply a checklist of species, however. The author also thoroughly examines the characteristics of each species and provides a detailed study of the anatomic and structural differences. Of particular importance is the author's work in detailing the numerous species that have newly appeared in the region since 1855. These recent arrivals mark a significant change in the local ecosystem and represent a range expansion from southern Europe and the Mediterranean, with likely causes including climate change, increased shipping traffic, and human activity. The author's work is thus not only a valuable resource for understanding the local mollusks but also an important contribution to our understanding of the rapidly changing European ecosystem. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Edoardo Francesco De Betta, Italian naturalist, was born April 6, 1822 in Malgolo in Trentino and died November 4, 1896 at Marcellise (San Martino Buon Albergo, Verona). Although he was passionate about natural history from an early age, his father forced him to study law. While he was working in the courts of Milan, the death of his cousin, Teresa De Betta in February 1848 left him a large inheritance. Thus enabled to turn to studying natural history, marrying Maria De Jnama Campostellato, daughter of the Countess Carlotta Martini Calliano, the following year. He wrote over 50 publications, covering a wide range of topics within his chosen field, including entomology, herpetology, ichthyology, malacologie, ornithology, and teratology -- (studies of malformations, or deviations from the normal type of structure, either in plants or animals). He also maintaned a lively interest in the politics and patriotic life of his region. Some of his collections are preserved in the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale. See OCLC 31027703.
