Hats, tools and implements of the Moluccas in Indonesia, finely engraved and hand-coloured. Prepared as plate 40 for the "Atlas historique" of the official account of Louis de Freycinet's Voyage autour monde . 1817-1820.

The French voyages in this period benefited from the French expansive world view, that saw artists & scientists accompanying the sailors on French voyages of exploration, recording scientific detail and assembling natural history collections. Jules Dumont D'Urville visited Australia twice, 1826-29 & 1837-40. His account of the second voyage was published in 1842 (text volumes); 1846 (atlas) and 1853 (natural history plates). Image 10.5 x 15.75 in with large margins. With a blind-stamp "Voyage de l'Astrolabe, Dumont D'Urville, Commandant LT" below the plate mark. Plate 15 from the "Poissons" section. Captivating watercolour by the French artist Antoine Germain Bevalet (1779-1850) depicting an adult male African lion in a landscape. Bevalet initially studied with his father, the French artist François Noël Bevalet (or Bevallet, active ca. 1780). He gained prominence as a nature draughtsman and illustrator with his contributions to well-known (early) 19th-century French works on natural history, such as those by the French explorers or naturalists Jules Dumont d'Urville (1790-1842), Louis Isidore Duperrey (1786-1865), Jean d'Audebard de Férussac (1745-1815), Louis Claude de Saulces de Freycinet (1779-1841), Joseph Paul Gaimard (1793-1858), José Joaquin da Gama Machado (died in 1862), Félix Édouard Guérin-Méneville (1799-1874), René Primevère Lesson (1794-1849), and Auguste Nicolas Vaillant (1793-1858).
