L'opera di Bewick divenne rapidamente una delle opere ornitologiche più popolari tra i non addetti ai lavori - il libro serviva come ?guida da campo per principianti? per le persone senza conoscenze specialistiche. Bewick illustrava meticolosamente ogni specie, attingendo dal vero quando possibile o utilizzando pelli quando necessario. I nomi comuni e scientifici, con le rispettive autorità, erano documentati. Il testo forniva descrizioni esaurienti degli uccelli, descrivendone dettagliatamente la distribuzione e il comportamento, spesso incorporando ampie citazioni di fonti a stampa o di corrispondenti.
