Fine, fresh copy with Folio Society bookplate front free endpaper/ issued without dust jacket. Hardcover. 192 pp. Edited and with an introduction for this edition by Ian Bain. Illustrated with wood-engravings and watercolors by the author; glossary. Thomas Bewick (1753-1828) was a celebrated English wood engraver and author of natural history works. His most famous work was "A History of British Birds" in two volumes (1797 and 1804 with a supplement in 1821) that featured small, finely detailed wood engravings of birds as well as engraved head- and tail pieces. His "Memoirs" was, in the first edition, decorated with engravings originally intended for his unpublished "History of British Fishes". This handsome Folio Society edition features sixty-seven of Bewick's best subjects for "British Birds", "British Quadrupeds" and "The Fables of Aesop".
