Wraps. Condition: Fine. Gill, Eric (illustrator). First Edition. Twenty-fourmo size, 28 pp. The Saint Dominic's Press, founded by Harry (Hilary) Douglas Clarke Pepler, flourished at Ditchling, Sussex, from 1916 to 1936. The first home of the Press was "a disused stable", with a hundred-year-old Stanhope hand-press which supposedly had belonged to William Morris. Pepler endeavored to do everything possible by hand, believing that such would both produce the best results and also be a "more individual or 'humane'.product". He therefore "preferred the handpress to the machine, handmade to machine-made paper, and handset founder's type to the products of typesetting machines." (N.b., quotes and information from "Three Private Presses" by Brocard Sewell.) Per Taylor and Sewell, "The Welfare Handbooks were a series of pamplets mainly concerned with social questions written from a Distributist and Roman Catholic standpoint." This volume contains scriptural passages pertaining to the age-old question of the relative merits of wealth vs. poverty, vis-a-vis one's relationship with God. Per the title page, "Being extracts from The New Testament of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, as translated from the Latin Vulgate by the English College at Rheims, A.D. 1582." ___DESCRIPTION: Brown wrappers printed in black, string-bound, with one engraving, Gill's "Christ and the Money-Changers" (P 152); Caslon O.F. type on Batachelor hand-made paper, twenty-fourmo size (5 3/8" by 4 1/4"), pagination: [i-iv] [1] 2-24. ___CONDITION: Fine overall, the wraps clean (except for one small spot on the front wrap) and without wear or sunning, the string binding strong, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; perhaps a touch of sunning around the spine and the aforementioned small spot, else fine. ___CITATION: Taylor and Sewell, no. A50; Eric Gill Bibliography, no. 270. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard shipping charge does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind book we sell. The biblical story of Ruth and Naomi, two women who leave the land of Moab to return to Naomi's native land of Bethlehem, is a story of love, devotion, and loyalty; it is a story of strength, as the two women must make a life for themselves together after their husbands die. This little volume, printed entirely in French, has engravings of scenes from the story at the opening of each chapter, and contains remarks by the comte de Keratry Auguste Hilarion (1769-1859), a French poet, critic, and politician who offers an analysis of the characters and motifs of the story. This volume features a lovely contemporary calf binding, smooth and supple, four lovely steel-engravings, and has advertisements from the publisher at the rear of the book. ___DESCRIPTION: Full contemporary marbled calf, gilt decorative borders on the front and rear boards, gilt decorations, ornaments, and lettering on the spine, gilt decorations along the edges of the boards, all edges gilt, brown endpapers, frontispiece a black-and-white engraving, black-and-white engravings at the opening of each chapter, ten pages of advertisements for other books available from the publishers at the rear of the book, original ribbon marker is present; twenty-fourmo (5.25" by 3.5"), pagination: [1-5] 6-222 [223] 224-234. Hardcover. Condition: New. Mazur, Michael (illustrator). Limited Edition. Folio, 16 1/4" by 11 1/2", 102 pages. The pagination follows the Hebrew convention, reading right to left, as do the lines of Hebrew. The type for the Hebrew is Hadassah, set in photocomposition through the good offices of Jaacov Har-El, in Tel Aviv, Israel. The type for the English is Lydian, set in photocomposition by Mackenzie & Harris. The text was printed from photopolymer plates in two cloors, black and purple. The size of the plate bearing the etching by Michael Masur is 11 1/2 by 7 1/8 inches. The intaglio printing was done by R.E. Townsend. The paper is Prague, handmade at the Velké Losiny mill in the Czech Republic. The binding, done in-house, is non-adhesive and hand-sewn with exposed thread into a cover made of handmade mauve Colombe paper from the Larroque et Pombié mill in France. The chimise and slipcase are covered in mauve Japanese cloth, with a paper spine label. Edition of 200 copies, plus 26 lettered copies hors de commerce, signed by the artist and the translator. Robert Alter, professsor of Hebrew and comparative literature at the University of California, Berkeley, had made a new translation of the first book of the Bible, which was published, with full scholarly apparatus, by W.W. Norton in 1996. It lacked the Hebrew text, and is provided in the Arion edition. All copies were accompanied by a copy of the Norton book to provide Alter's introduction and notes to readers of this deluxe edition. The types Hadassah for the Hebrew and Lydian for the English, were designed by Henri Friedlaender and Warren Chappell, both students of the great German calligrapher, type designer, and arts-and-crafts leader, Rudolf Koch (1876-1934), who work Hoyem collects. The type was computer generated and printed by letterpress from polymer plates. The type-setters in Israel asked if our rabbi would proofread the Hebrew. We answered that Professor Alter would do that. Alter's translation conveys the semantic nuances and lively orchestration of literary effects of the Hebrew and at the same time has stylistic and rhythmic integrity as literary English. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. The type is Garamond Bold, in Monotype composition by Mackenzie-Harris, with 14 point for the words ascribed to St. John and 18 point for words ascribed to God and the angels, with Hadriano for verse numbers and Stempel Garamond Titling for display. The paper is French handmade Apta Velin from the Richard de Bas Mill, printed damp. The binding, done in-house, is hand-sewn on a concertina and attached to oak plywood boards, with a white alum-tawed pigskin spine. The title is blind-stamped on the spine and a lightening bolt printed on both boards. Special edition copies are in oak boxes made by Miles Karpilow of Berkeley, California, with a bottom book-holding tray and a separate locking lid containing a relief sculpture by Dine of an emerging human skull. In eight copies the sculpture was cast in gray-white sculptural cement, then painted by the artist in acrylic colors. The Revelation of Saint John the Divine, the last book of the New Testament from the King James Version of the Bible, with 29 woodblock prints in a special edition box by Jim Dine. This was the second artist book of the Arion Press, after "A Travel Book" (No. 4), and the first in a series of collaborations with internationally known contemporary artists. It was the beginning of a long partnership between Jim Dine and Hoyem that has resulted in nine books containing original prints. The text was broken into poetic lines, set in two sizes of type to differentiate the speakers. The prints were titled with excerpts from the text. For wood blocks, the publisher supplied the artist with oak boards cut to 11 3/4 inches by 8 3/4 inches, the size of the text block, and milled to type height. But when the artist ran out of the supplied wood, he used any wood that came to hand, including his wife's cutting board and a piece from a lumber pile that was badly cracked and warped, neither of these pieces being type high. The printer managed with careful make-ready and by modifying the ink roller height. This copy one of the eight special edition copies (plus 2 hors de commerce), signed by the artist, in the special box with a bottom book-holding tray and a separate locking lid containing a relief sculpture by Dine of an emerging human skull, cast in gray-white sculptural cement, then painted by the artist in acrylic colors. ___POSTAGE: Please note that this is an exceptionally heavy item and additional postage may apply; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Hardcover. Condition: New. 18 by 13 inches, 1,356 pages; composed on a Macintosh computer and cast by Monotype in Romulus type, in 16 point for the main text and 11 point for subsidiary material and explanatory notes, with larger sizes (24, 36, 72 point) for display, handset from foundry type; initial letters designed by Sumner Stone for photopolymer plates; printed by letterpress in two colors of ink, black for text, red for initial letters, on Somerset, a mouldmade paper of 100% cotton fiber. Weight, with box, is approximately 50 pounds. The Bible is bound as two volumes for ease of handling and advantages for display. The Bible is limited to an edition of 400 numbered copies for sale. Following in the tradition of Gutenberg and other fine printers over more than five centuries, Andrew Hoyem and the artisans at Arion Press have created an oversize, Folio Edition of the Holy Bible using traditional letterpress techniques and the finest materials and craftsmanship. The Arion Press Bible is the first large folio presentation of the contemporary translation and current scholarship of the New Revised Standard Version - and it is probably the last Bible to be printed by letterpress from metal type. This Bible is intended for liturgical use in church services as well as for the collections of individuals and libraries. The text is printed by letterpress on English mouldmade paper. Designed for ease of reading from a lectern, the text is set in Romulus, a type of graceful lines and clarity of character recognition. Each book of the Bible begins with a large red initial letter. This alphabet of roman capitals was created for the Arion Press by the noted type designer Sumner Stone, formerly director of digital design for Adobe. Note that this item is for the cloth-bound copies, and comes in its own black linen box. There is also a leather version available, please see our inventory no. CNAP060a. ___POSTAGE: Please note that due to the exceptional size and weight of this work, postage will be at cost; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
