Contact seller4-star sellerFirst edition. Small promotional flyer (4 x 5 inches). Bifolium with title on front, an image of the plank, explanatory text and the rear is blank. Very good condition."The redwood plank pictured was taken by boat to San Francisco , and moved by train to Detroit, costing over $3000 for transportation. The plank was shaped by hand using a broadax during the winter of 1889, 1890 and 1891 by the Elk River Mill and Lumber Company. It was cut from a stump near Falk [now a ghost town in Humboldt County] measuring 12 x 16 feet and 5 inches thick. The plank was named "Mammoth Redwood Plank" by a Detroit varnishing company, Berry Brothers. The company used the plank as a marketing campaign for its varnishing product and [it was] showcased in the Forestry and Horticultural building at the fair. It was renowned as being the largest piece of finished lumber on the [Columbia World's Exposition] grounds." (J. Clark; Falk; Company Lumber Town of the American West).…

Contact seller4-star sellerFirst edition. Quarto. 48 pp. with numerous illustrations. Publisher's printed white wrappers. A bit of aging but overall, very good. The front cover bears an artistic rendering of "Wawona, over 6,000 Years Old; The Giant of the Pacific". The whole issue is devoted to California and includes an article on the Big Trees by Chrissie Pointer Leigh, "Where Roars the Tuolumne" by Juliette Muron Hood, Uncle Sam's Camels by Leigh again. Much of the magazine is taken up with information about Southerners living in California. The Southern Magazine was the official publication of the United Daughters of the Confederacy during the 1930s. Their male counterpart, The Confederate Veteran, shutdown with its last issue in December of 1932. In 1934 the UDC started to publish The Southern Magazine. In its issues the UDC continued its stated goal of the preservation of Southern heritage and not so blatantly its defense of the Ku Klux Klan as saviors of the South from African Americans. The UDC decided in 1936 to run a very lengthy article in The Southern Magazine justifying the Ku Klux Klan. This was their first blatant support of the Klan and the magazine folded soon after in 1937.…

23 cm, pp. [1-3] 4-430 [431-432: blank], original pink wrappers printed in black, side stapled. First edition. Hearings were held before special committees of the California legislature in response to widespread criticism of the Yosemite Commissioners which peaked in the pages of the San Francisco Examiner in 1888. Yosemite artist Charles D. Robinson was the most active, though by no means the only critic of the grant's management. His allegations resulted in twenty-two charges against the commissioners, including favoritism in the awarding of leases, fencing and cultivation of valley lands for the benefit of concessionaires, and tree cutting for private gain. The commissioners were exonerated and most of the charges were dismissed. However, the Assembly committee's report recommended that changes be made in grant management (especially with regard to promoting competition), that the commission be reorganized as a body of three members who would reside in Yosemite at least part of the year, and that Congress enlarge the grant to encompass the valley's entire watershed. As a result of the controversy Guardian Mark L. McCord was dismissed and Galen Clark (who had previously served as Yosemite's first guardian, 1866-1880) was appointed as his replacement. Shortly thereafter Congress, rather than enlarging the Yosemite Grant, surrounded it with a national park, leading inevitably to the placement of Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove under federal control as well. This is the rare offprint of this document published in Appendix to the Journals of the Senate and Assembly of the twenty-eighth session of the legislature of the state of California. Volume VIII (Sacramento: State Office, J. D. Young, Supt. State Printing, 1889). The Senate issued a 40 page report the same year. Currey and Kruska 52. Library stamp of the "Yosemite Museum Nature Library / Yosemite National Park, Calif." on the front wrapper. Lacks spine and rear wrapper, front wrapper chipped and backed with brown paper tape, spine reinforced with tape, title leaf clipped at upper and lower margins, small chips from the margins of the first few leaves of text, several other leaves dog-eared, some shallow loss along the fore-edge of the final blank leaf, internally very good overall.
