He has been a cruising ambassador of puppetry for the State Department in India, Russia, Afghanistan, and Nepal. His home is a six-story workshop, film studio, and warehouse in New York City. His wife Cora, a former actress and Martha Graham dancer and an accomplished puppeteer, is his working partner. They met during the production of Orson Welles' Dr. Faustus, for which Bil created puppets of the Seven Deadly Sins, and Cora was all their voices.
