Anvers, 1678,' in ink '£6 + 5%' and '£5'. With the Binder's stamp of C. Smith to head of front free endpaper, neat old paper repair to margin of title page, marbled endpapers, a good wide margin copy. A very rare edition of which we can only locate the Trinity College Dublin copy. (Jisc Library Hub). Worldcat. locates no copies of this edition. The engravings are done after the once famous paintings of the Benedictine Abbey of Liessies, of which most were destroyed during the French Revolution. The spiritual writer Étienne Binet (1569-1639), a Jesuit priest from Dijon, has supplied a short biography for each saint as well as a list of central maxims associated with them, in order to encourage contemplation by the reader. Binet played an important part in Jesuit affairs, he is remembered chiefly as an important figure in the renewal of religious life in France in the 17th century. A close friend of St. Francis de Sales and St. Jane Frances de Chantal. On passing through the Benedictine Abbey of Liessies he marvelled at the portraits of saints appearing in the heart of this abbey. He shared his enthusiasm by delivering to the public this work which recounts the life of about forty saints. Alongside the predictable images there are six women saints in nun's habits: Scholastica, Waltrude, Clare of Assisi, Bridget of Sweden, Joan of France, and the canonized Teresa of Avila. The radiant plates designed by Theodoor Galle (1571-1633) and engraved by his equally talented brother Cornelius (1576-1656) (engravers working in Antwerp) promote this same spirit of meditation and communicate the distinct personalities of their subjects. The plates are cleverly designed, full of animated activity and detail, and characterized by a high level of precision, even in the rendering of the smallest figures.

Couverture rigide.
