Born in Richmond, Virginia, Henry Binga Dismond (1891-1956) was a pioneering Ha…rlem physician, medical device inventor, student of Haitian culture, and poet. While attending Rush Medical College, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving with the 370th Infantry during World War I. Near the war's end, he was cited for courageous leadership under heavy gunfire and promotion to First Lieutenant. This collection of verse draws on his military service and the political awakening of the Harlem Renaissance. Illustrations by E. Simms Campbell (1906-71), the first African American cartoonist published in nationally distributed magazines. Octavo. Original blue cloth binding, with gilt-stamped titling. Some minor edgewear to the boards. The dust jacket is slightly shelfworn, with a large, though comparatively minor stain; else very good. Signed.

Inscribed by the author: "To Mrs. Max Neiniroff with best wishes for centuries of happiness, Binga Dismond." The author was a Richmond-born, World War I veteran who for a time held the world record for the quarter mile, became a doctor and was the Director of the Department of Physical Therapy at Harlem Hospital. The verse is accompanied by illustrations from the African-American artist E. Simms Campbell, a noted cartoonist, he has illustrated works by Sterling Brown, Arna Bontemps, and Langston Hughes.
