Paperback. Condition: Good. This volume contains nearly a decade of Shadman's diaries, spanning from his departure from Tehran in mid-December 1933 to March 1943 - almost two years before the end of his tenure as a delegate of the Imperial Government of Iran with the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (AIOC) in London. During his time in… London, Shadman took advantage of academic opportunities by enrolling at the Sorbonne, where he pursued the equivalent of a master's degree in international law. He later continued his studies at the London School of Economics as a graduate student, completing a doctorate in international history. The diaries provide a detailed account of Shadman's activities as a writer, student, and government employee in London during World War II. Shortly after his arrival, he accepted a part-time teaching position as a Persian instructor at the University of London's School of Oriental Studies, where he served as a teaching assistant to Professor Vladimir Minorsky. However, as Nazi air raids brought instability and chaos to London, Shadman relocated to Cambridge, where he met and fell in love with his future wife, Farangis Namazi - the only Iranian female student at Oxford University at the time. While in Cambridge, Shadman formed a close relationship with Hasan Taqizadeh, the prominent Iranian intellectual, scholar, and politician who, years earlier in 1933, had played a key role in securing Shadman's appointment as an administrative assistant in the Iranian delegation to AIOC. The diaries in this volume conclude with the British and Soviet invasion of Iran in September 1941 and the subsequent downfall of Reza Shah. Less than two years later, Shadman's employment with AIOC ended, and he returned to Tehran with his wife.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Stated First Edition. Signed and inscribed by both the author and the illustrator on the half-title page. Fortunately, the white and light blue covers of the book itself are perfectly clean (that's also the case for the three page edges). The covers…show only minimal wear, a small crease at the top right-hand corner of the front and a little crinkling at the bottom edge of the spine. The book is square, not slanted, and very solidly bound from cover to cover, with very nicely tight pages. The pages are exceptionally clean. I didn't see any soiling at all. That's also the case for the inside covers and end papers. And there's no creasing or dogeared corners on any of the pages. No markings. No attachments. And with the exception of the aforementioned signatures and inscriptions, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. The dust jacket looks pretty much new. You can see it in the first few photographs. It is perfectly clean. There are no tears. It is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. There's a light crease at the bottom edge of the front flap. The jacket will be fitted with a protective cover after the photos are scanned. 'One year after their wedding, Ken and Bing finishes strenuous home-renovation project that puts their new marriage to the test. After the dumpster is gone and the last shingle is in place, they had to the French countryside to celebrate their long-delayed honeymoon, swearing that they are out of the home renovation game for good. With joy and humor, Ken recounts the couple's mishaps and misadventures, capturing the essence of French village life and the unique characters they meet. He shares the couple's hilarious linguistic blunders and the awkwardness of being tourists in a close-knit town.' 'Ken McAdams is a graduate of Yale University and a former Marine Corps Naval Aviator and has broken four world records and received the decoration as a first civilian volunteer to fly Marines into Iraq. Marian " Bing" Bingham did her graduate work at Wesleyan University with a Concentration in Art.'. Marian " Bing" Bingham (illustrator). Inscribed by Author(s).
