First edition. First edition. In publisher's illustrated folder with strings. 20 loose large lithographs with printed titles in Hungarian, French, German, and English. 20 loose lithograph plates ca. 340 × 480 mm. The first edition of the Biró's renowned Horthy-cycle, a graphical documentation of the White Terror in Hungary. One of the best-known and most uncompromising Hungarian graphic designers at the beginning of the 20th century, creator of the famous image of Social Democrats, the Red Man with Hammer, Mihály Biró (18861948) devoted himself early to the leftist social and political ideas. After the fall of the short-lived Hungarian Soviet Republic in 1919, Biró had to flee to Vienna from the terror of revenge, and the right-wing dictatorship led by Miklós Horthy. In Vienna, Biró created the present cycle of twenty shocking colored lithographs, a graphical interpretation of the horror stories told by Hungarian emigrants in Vienna, who reported about the dramatic events of the White Terror and the anti-Semitic pogroms in their homeland. As a result of the publication of his portfolio, a warrant for Biró's arrest was issued in Hungary, he was permanently expelled from the country, and the copies of the folder found in Hungary were destroyed. Folder rubbed, corners bumped. Artistically restored. The plates are tanned, otherwise in very good condition. In publisher's illustrated folder with strings. 20 loose large lithographs with printed titles in Hungarian, French, German, and English.…

No Binding. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. BÍRÓ, Mihály (illustrator): 1928 MÁJUS 1. [MAY 1, 1928 ] Responsible Publisher: István Farkas, Népszava (daily newspaper). Authors: Antal Farkas, Árpád Szakasits, Antal Szakasits, Illés Mónus, Gyula Dóczi, József Migray, Emil Gyagyovszky, Péter Sajóparty, Árpád Szélpál, Imre Nyigri, Gyözö Gergely, P. Danilof, Zseni Várnai. Budapest, 1928. Népszava. - Világosság Rt. 7 [1] p. with drawings by Mihály Bíró (printed in red and black). Folded. A fold mark is visible down the middle of the publication. (268 x 400 mm). The textual content of the publication features the finest Social Democratic writers of the era. A festive, occasional publication. This is a special holiday supplement of Népszava, the official daily political newspaper of the Hungarian Social Democratic Party (MSZDP). During the interwar period, in the Horthy era, Népszava regularly published these supplements on May 1st. This 1928 May Day publication is a representative imprint of the intellectual circle of the MSZDP and Népszava within the legal Hungarian labor movement between the two World Wars. The booklet served a dual purpose: it was both a tool for political mobilization and an accessible, high-quality cultural and literary anthology for the working class. The exact number of such publications issued is unknown. The Art of Mihály Bíró: Large-scale drawings by Mihály Bíró feature on both the front and back covers. The most outstanding artistic value of the publication lies in Bíró's work, which provides the booklet's visual framework. The graphics on the front and back covers form a dramatic contrast, showcasing Bíró's genius. The Front Cover (Strength and Hope): The heroic figure of a proletarian erupting from the earth radiates optimism, expressive power, and faith in the future. The Back Cover (The Threat): Antal Farkas's poem, "Outcry on May Night" (Jajkiáltás Május éjszakáján), is accompanied by an image emerging from a black background: caterpillars destroying red flowers (presumably carnations, a symbol of socialism). This brilliant visual metaphor, blending Art Nouveau and Expressionist elements, alludes to the internal and external enemies (the oppression of the Horthy regime or economic misery) devouring the labor movement (the flowers). Bíró's signature is clearly visible at the bottom of the page. Mihály Bíró and the "Népszava Identity": Bíró was not merely an occasional illustrator for the MSZDP and Népszava; he created the visual identity of the Hungarian labor movement. In 1911, Népszava commissioned him to design a poster for a subscription drive. It was then that Bíró created the famous Red Man with a Hammer (a massive, muscular worker in an apron, bringing down a giant hammer). This figure became not only the official logo and trademark of Népszava and the MSZDP for decades, but also the most recognized symbol of the ongoing struggle against oppression in Hungary. Bíró essentially became the party's "in-house graphic designer," creating congress posters, union appeals, and the covers of holiday publications. Today, Mihály Bíró is recognized worldwide as one of the founding fathers of modern political poster art. He introduced monumental, exaggerated, muscular figures, dramatic foreshortening, and the stark contrast of black and red into political graphics-a style later copied throughout Europe. He designed the world-famous posters exposing the White Terror of the Horthy regime (e.g., the graphic depicting Horthy riding a skeletal horse wading through blood), which circulated in the global press. He also worked in Berlin and Paris. His posters are now held in the world's most significant collections, such as the MoMA in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. ( O,O ) /)__) , .
