Innanzitutto, per dare voce a uno psichiatra che, per motivi storici e probabilmente anche politici, è rimasto finora nell'ombra, e che invece sembra abbia offerto, molti anni fa, un'analisi della condizione autistica che appare ancora oggi innovativa e illuminante. Georg Frankl: ebreo, costretto a fuggire negli Stati Uniti, lasciò Vienna e la clinica dove aveva lavorato per anni nelle mani di un giovane medi- co, Hans Asperger, che sarebbe diventato uno dei cardini della storia della diagnosi di autismo. Negli Stati Uniti, George Frankle fu il primo a segnalare a Kanner la perdita del contatto affettivo nell'autismo; e se il suo lavoro non fosse rimasto nascosto, forse tutt'oggi avremmo una visione di- versa di questa condizione. Il secondo motivo per cui abbiamo ritenuto importante scrivere questo volume è la peculiarità della prospettiva congiunta con cui si è approccia- to il tema dell'autismo. Sebbene i due autori appartengano, infatti, a due "scuole" molto diverse - la clinica e la filosofia - lo scambio di prospettive è avvenuto con grande naturalezza: il rigore della scienza e l'utilità della filosofia si sono illuminate a vicenda in un costante dialogo.
