Half tan morocco with olive green cloth boards. Light wear and some surface scuffing to the morocco spine. The have treated the morocco with professional book conservator's leather dressing--to good effect. Light wear to the cloth boards. Bump to the bottom foredge of both boards. Fron blank free endpaper is missing. Front hinge starting but still strong. Pages are tight and clean with no mark. Foredge of the text block deckled. No name of previous owner. No odor. No water damage. No stains. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.

Signed and inscribed by George Blacker Morgan to Sir Charles Wakefield (then Baron of Saltwood and Lord Mayor of London, but later Viscount Wakefield of Hythe). 8vo. Boards worn and rubbed at edges, discoloured and marked, pushed at spine ends. Endpaper and prelims have light foxing, pages browned at edges else internally neat, clean and tidy. This is a scholarly work examining the anonymous 1605 letter to Lord Monteagle waring him not to attend the State Opening of Parliament on 5 November that year. The letter was a key factor in uncovering the Gunpowder Plot - the conspiracy to blow up the House of Lords and assassinate king James I. It analyses tehe handwriting and identifes the author as William Vavsour, an associate of Francis Tresham. Sir Charles Wakefield was a Liverpool entrepreneur, founder of the Britis oil company, Castrol, who served as Lord Mayor of London from 1915-16).

Written by Payne Fisher, a poet active in the seventeenth century. Left a pauper after fighting for the wrong side during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, he wrote a great deal of Latin verse; while locked up in Fleet Prison, he undertook this work along with one on the tombs of St. Paul's Cathedral. Both of these catalogues saw later revised editions, demonstrating their importance.This was initially published in 1668, two years following the fire, and lists the tombs and gravestones of extant churches from 'St. Katherines beyond the Tower to Temple Barre'.A limited edition, No. 72 of one hundred copies printed. In the original paper wraps. Externally generally smart, with some age-toning and chipping to the extremities, in particular around the tail of the spine and to the front board.
