First edition. 1993. 138pp. B&W images to rear."Elisaveta Bagryana (1893-1991) was one of the leading figures in Bulgarian poetry for almost a century. A highly-spirited and independent-minded feminist, Bagryana was famous not only for her poetic innovation, but also for her outspoken attitude towards love. ?The passionate fervour with which she lead her life is evident in her poetry. With dizzying urgency she describes her need to experience everything life has to offer. Burning with 'the mad fire of risk', she dashes headlong into life, travelling the world, and repeatedly falling in love, as if to satisfy her daily thirst for adventure. ? No traditional Penelope, waiting patiently and passively at home for the return of her conquering hero: 'I don't want to fade and flicker like an icon lamp / in the cell of a nun, / to melt away like a forgotten candle / / into its barren flame / to shed tears on an outstretched map / as if it were a shroud' - Bagryana takes life by the throat and lives it. ? The poems in this special centenary volume have been selected and introduced by Bagryana's "disciple', the acclaimed poet, and Vice-President of Bulgaria, Blaga Dimitrova." The book is in excellent condition. Minor sunning to front cover edge and spine. There are no inscriptions and all contents are tight and clean.

Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Signed and inscribed by author to noted American poet Denise Levertov: 'To M's Denise Levertov with best admirations B. Dimitrova 26 IX 80. Sofia.' A very good copy in the original wraps (minor wear to edges; slight traces of dampstaining to bottom edge). A nice association between two prominent poets, each active against the Vietnam War. Blaga Nikolova Dimitrova (1922-2003) was a Bulgarian poet, later elected Vice-President of Bulgaria. During the Vietnam War, Dimitrova visited the country several times as a journalist, and in 1967 adopted a Vietnamese girl. This book appears to be the story of those experiences. Levertov was herself a prominent antiwar activist and author of a powerful body of antiwar poetry, including the collection 'Life at War', composed of poems inspired by the Vietnam War, which was published the same year as Dimitrova adopted her daughter.
