Paperback. Condition: New. This anthology of rare stories of crime and suspense brings together 18 tales from the Golden Age of Detective Fiction for the first time in book form, including uncollected stories by Ngaio Marsh and John Dickson Carr. The Golden Age of detective fiction had begun inauspiciously with the publication of E.C. Bentley's schismatic Trent's Last Case in 1913, but it hit its stride in 1920 when both Agatha Christie and Freeman Wills Crofts - latterly crowned queen and king of the genre - had crime novels published for the first time. They ushered in two decades of exemplary mystery writing, the era of the whodunit, the impossible crime and the locked-room mystery, with stories that have thrilled and baffled generations of readers. This new volume in the Bodies from the Library series features the work of 18 prolific authors who, like Christie and Crofts, saw their popularity soar during the Golden Age. Aside from novels, they all wrote short fiction - stories, serials and plays - and although most of them have been collected in books over the last 100 years, here are the ones that got away. In this book you will encounter classic series detectives including Colonel Gore, Roger Sheringham, Hildegarde Withers and Henri Bencolin; Hercule Poirot solves 'The Incident of the Dog's Ball'; Roderick Alleyn returns to New Zealand in a recently discovered television drama by Ngaio Marsh; and Dorothy L. Sayers' chilling 'The House of the Poplars' is published for the first time. With a full-length novella by John Dickson Carr and an unpublished radio script by Cyril Hare, this diverse collection concludes with some early 'flash fiction' commissioned by Collins' Crime Club in 1938. Each mini story had to feature an orange, resulting in six very different tales from Peter Cheyney, Ethel Lina White, David Hume, Nicholas Blake, John Rhode and - in his only foray into writing detective fiction - the publisher himself, William Collins.

First Edition
Stapled Wraps. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Offered is a first edition, first printing, of "An Adventure of the Spirit: Anniversary Sermon," the text of a sermon given in May 1956 by Dr. Berkeley Blake (Unitarian Society, Santa Barbara, California) and published in that year either by the Unitarian Church (Santa Barbara) or by The Unitarian Church of the Larger Fellowship out of Boston, Massachusetts (on the rear page, the reader is invited to write the Boston address for more information about the Unitarian faith). The outer folded covers measure 5-1/2" by 8-1/2" - when opened, the lengthy eight-page mimeographed sermon unfolds to measure 8-1/2" by 11". In the sermon, Dr. Blake discusses his life, spiritual growth, and critical reading of the Bible and the moral quandaries certain passages raise. Discussing The Parable of the Wheat and the Tares (Matthew 13), The Parable of Lazarus and the Rich Man (Luke 16), and Jesus Cursing the Fig Tree (Mark 11), Dr. Blake says, "These passages are factual in the sense that they appear in the Christian Gospels as representing the teachings of Jesus. How in the face of them can we continue to accept and teach such beliefs about Jesus as that which I have just quoted? Do we not see the confusion in which we are involving not only our own thinking but the thinking of our children regarding ethical and moral values, when the general beliefs we teach, though in the name of ideals, say one thing and the particulars say just the opposite?" Light sunning to outer corners; light wear.

First Edition
Stapled Wraps. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Offered is a first edition, first printing, of "'Special Issue - Christianity'" - the text of a sermon given by Dr. Berkeley Blake (Unitarian Church, Santa Barbara, California) published in 1956 either by the Unitarian Church (Santa Barbara) or by The Unitarian Church of the Larger Fellowship out of Boston, Massachusetts (on the rear page, the reader is invited to write the Boston address for more information about the Unitarian faith). No date indicated, although 1956. The outer folded covers measure 5-1/2" by 8-1/2" - when opened, the lengthy six-page mimeographed sermon unfolds to measure 8-1/2" by 11". In the sermon, Dr. Blake discusses the recently-released issue of Life Magazine and its "Special Issue - Christianity." A few brief quotes from Dr. Blake's sermon: "Like liberals in other denominations, we of the Unitarian point of view are given to thinking of Christianity in humanitarian terms. The angelic promises at Bethlehem of good will and peace on earth, the two commandments which Jesus designated as being the greatest of all, the Parable of the Good Samaritan, and Jesus' reply to the man who came asking the way to eternal life, to a great extent sum up the heart of the Christian Gospel for us. To us, therefore, the Christmas number of LIFE magazine this year came as something of a shock, arriving as it did on the eve of that happy festival of home and love. On the front cover there was pictured, in dark mahogany, the tortured figure of Jesus, with arms outstretched, nailed to the Roman cross against a background of gold" - "The concept of God as a God of massive retaliation against all except those who believe in Christ as Lord and Saviour represents its controlling voice from the Vatican in Rome to tiny congregations of almost every faith tucked away in the most remote corners of Christendom. It is a voice that vitally concerns even those of us for whom it does not speak religiously because of its effect upon the international situation." "Very Good" written in pen to upper edge of front cover.
