Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Hartwell, Alonzo - Woodcuts (illustrator). 103 Pages.Crease to back cover that runs vertically from top to bottom Originally published in England in 1816 by John Harris. Copies came to America, and in the middle of the 1830s, it was issued by Munroe and Francis of Boston, in a redesigned, Americanized edition. The resulting book went through several printings without internal alteration. Among the legendary books of early American childhood is Marmaduke Multiply. Prepared as a fellow volume to Peter Piper, it teaches the multiplication table by means of catchy rhymes and engaging woodcuts. An early 19th century anticipation of Sesame Street, it remains one of the pleasantest and most engaging of early children's books. This reprint of Murmaduke Multiply reproduces the Munroe and Francis edition, the first American version of the rhymes. Designed and illustrated by Alonzo Hartwell it first appeared in the middle 1830's. Through succeeding editions, up until the 1870's, it was a favorite means of affording combined instruction and entertainmemt to young America. Today Marmaduke Multiply can still be used for its original amusememt and instruction purposes, but, with its quaint woodcuts and loaded rhymes, it has the added value of showing the mind of America in the days of the not so old-fashioned schoolhouse. This reprint of the 1841 edition is illustrated with 71 woodcuts.

Trade paperback. Condition: Good. The format is approximately 9 inches by 1 inches. xv, [1], 190, [2] pages. Illustrated cover. illustrations. Text is largely in a two column format. Everett F. Bleiler was born April 30, 1920 in Massachusetts. He received an anthropology degree from Harvard University in 1942 and a degree in the history of culture from the University of Chicago. He started working at Dover Publications in 1955, eventually becoming executive vice president in 1967, and left the company in 1977. After leaving Dover, he worked at Charles Scribner's Sons until 1986. He edited or co-edited numerous works including the annual Best Science Fiction Stories series, the Year's Best Science Fiction Novels series, and several anthologies. His nonfiction work includes The Checklist of Fantastic Literature, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction, Supernatural Fiction Writers: Fantasy and Horror, Science Fiction: The Early Years, and Science Fiction: The Gernsback Years. He received several awards including the 1978 World Fantasy Award (Special, Professional), the 1984 SFRA Pilgrim Award, the 1988 World Fantasy Life Achievement Award, the 1994 First Fandom Award, and the 2004 International Horror Guild Living Legend Award. Bleiler wrote two works of fiction: the fantasy novel Firegang: A Mythic Fantasy, set in the tree of Yggdrasil as well as moving across time and space, and Magistrate Mai and the Invisible Murderer, a detective story set in ancient China. The dime novel authors are Horatio Alger, Frederick van Rensselaer Dey, Francis Doughty, Edward Ellis, Prentiss Ingraham,Theodore Menten, William Patten and Edward Wheeler. The eight dime novels have been selected to show major tastes and trends, important authors and major series with the almost limitless sea of publication. Two detectives, Old King Brady and Nick Carter show various styles of crime fighting; two western figures, Buffalo Bill and Deadwood Dick represent two major frontier adventurers. Among outlaws the James Brothers are easily preeminent and among inventions, a steam, man. In the ethics and morals brand, or rages to riches Burt Standish and Horatio Alger obviously must be included. This is the First Dover Edition, presumed first printing.
