Thomas Bleitner stellt in seinem Buch 16 Frauen vor, die als Schriftstellerinnen, Musen, Salonieren, Kauffrauen, Publizistinnen oder Frauenrechtlerinnen ihre Spuren an der Alster hinterlassen haben. Der Gefahr, allein auf merkantile Merkmale und repräsentative Funktionen reduziert zu werden, sahen sich die Hamburgerinnen schon früh ausgesetzt. Am Jungfernstieg, schreibt Heinrich Heine, »da stolzieren die schönen Kaufmannstöchter, mit deren Liebe man auch so viel bares Geld bekömmt«; sie seien, knüpft Theodor Fontane später an, »alle so zweifelsohne, haben innerlich und äußerlich so was ungewöhnlich Gewaschenes und bezeugen in Allem, was sie thun und nicht thun, die Richtigkeit der Lehre vom Einfluß der guten Kinderstube«. Als vornehm, da ist Fontane unumwunden zuzustimmen, gelten Hanseatinnen seit jeher, und wohlhabend waren sie auch sofern sie jenen gutbürgerlichen Kreisen entstammten, in denen Heine sich in seiner Hamburger Zeit bewegte.
