The large red initials printed in the regular edition are done by calligrapher Elizabeth "Betse" Curtis. The book is a compilation of travellers' descriptions of real and mythical beasts drawn from five hundred years of travelogues. Each page of text is adorned with a small wood engraving of the creature, with the initial letter of the name superimposed.
