Frédéric, Baron de Trenck, né en 1726, intègre l'armée prussienne en 1742. Intrépide et aventurier, il séduit la princesse Amélie, soeur du roi Frédéric II, mais ce dernier, mis au fait, l'enferme dans la forteresse de Glatz d'où notre héros s'échappe en 1746 pour entrer au service de la Russie. A la mort de son cousin François en 1749, Frédéric retourne en Allemagne pour s'occuper de son héritage. Arrêté de nouveau par Frédéric II il est confiné pendant dix ans à Magdebourg, chargé de 68 livres de chaînes. On le retrouvera plus tard à Paris en 1791. Bock accolse inizialmente con grande favore i fermenti rivoluzionari ma ne rimase ben presto disilluso avvicinandosi a posizioni sempre più "reazionarie" con il susseguirsi degli avvenimenti rivoluzionari. L'autore fu uno dei primi studiosi francesi, insieme a Anquetil-Duperron, ad essere interessato allo zoroastrismo o mazdaismo. Lo Zoroastrismo è indicato tradizionalmente anche con il termine Mazdayasna da?n? (medio-persiano d?n ? M?zd?sn, religione degli adoratori di Mazd?) e loro stessi come mazdayasna (adoratori di Mazd?, medio-persiano m?zd?sn), indicandosi quindi come seguaci del dio creatore denominato Ahura Mazd? ("Saggio signore" o "Signore che crea con il pensiero"). Da qui la sua denominazione corrente di Mazdaismo o Mazdeismo ritenuta come l'unica corretta da alcuni iranisti.
