Condition: Good. in-4 (mm. 226x163), ff. (34), pp. 1200, ff. Fred. Poij, Archiatra di Karolina, Principessa di Orange-Nassau (1743-1787). Hunt 66; Nissen BBI 183; Stafleu TL2 576. Book.

Lutheran Pastor Jerome Tragus called Bock (1498-1554), was also a doctor and an apothecary. Exiled in Sarrebruck after some religious troubles, he became a doctor at the Court of the Earl of Nassau. Bock is a leader among the revivers of botany in the 16th century. His studies on plants resulted from live observations, in nature, during his frequent excursions in the Ardennes, Vosges, Jura, Swiss Alps and the borders of the Rhine. "Bock is the second Germanic founder of Botany. His descriptions of flowers were remarkably intelligible? he took into consideration some elements that his predecessors completely ignored. He established the corolla, stamens and pistils as essential components of many flowers and he's probably the first botanist from the 16th century who understood the necessity of a classification." Hunt. "It was him first who introduced a certain method in botany that we couldn't find nor in Brunfel neither in Fuchs." (Jourdan, Biographie médicale.) The « New Kreutter Buch », the most important work by Jerome Bock, was printed in Strasbourg in 1539. Praised for its remarkable descriptions, it didn't contain however any illustration. All the iconographic part of this compilation was entrusted to the flowers painter David Kandel who conceived and executed more than 500 botanic drawings, wood engraved in the text, some of them with the artist's monogram. Most of those plates, published in 1546, were original; some were inspired by Brunfels and Fuchs. Beautiful gothic Edition from Strasbourg illustrated with more than 500 woodcuts, whose obvious iconographic richness is magnified in this copy with the bright colors used by a watercolorist on each of these engravings. A great part of the woodcuts follow the quite classical presentation of a 16th century herbarium. Some, filled with whim, are however an excuse for the author to represent animal or animated scenes, with a tree or a plant in the background: Asleep man under the grapevine. Pigs lead to the pannage under an oak. Sheperds under a beech. Rustic dance, storks, cherries picking, nuts picking by an adorned woman . Superb copy preserved in its attractive contemporary blind-stamped pigskin binding on wooden boards, with the clasps preserved, magnified by the contemporary hand-coloring.

Portrait of Hieronymus Bock, title-vignette, numerous woodcut figures throughout; waterstained, especially on lower part of the book and particularly in the rear, considerable spotting or foxing, both preliminary and posterior leaves with paper-fills or realigning to strengthen each leaf, professionally done. At the beginning and end with some reinforcements and restorations in the margins, leaf 230 torn with text loss (lower portion of leaf, losing 11 lines of text â" to greater or lesser degree), 21 leaves in the front and 18 of the final 20 leaves are heavily stained and with considerable paper-fills, largely along the outer margins â" the top inner corner of a leaf from the Register [SS7], with loss. Odd printer's error where leaf 287 recto is not present but instead is printed as f.288 recto, and in the two consecutive leaves "288" and 288, versos, are correct. Thus f.287 (r) is printed in error as if it were f.288 (r). A few minor ink annotations within the text (see ff. aui, 279v, 280r), the first note of which is dated in ms.: April 5, 1613; underlining [8v, 9r, 18v, 23r, 58r, 85r, 244v], small burn-hole f.119 (touches a few letters), etc.), some worm-trails (see the gutter through the latter half of the book â" however these are minor trails). 20th century elaborately stamped calf, raised bands, all to imitate a fine late 16h century binding, clasps have broken away (only one remains saved), by [Ernst] Renggli [Buchbinder], St. Gallen, Switzerland. Rare. AS IS. WITH PORTRAIT AND APPROXIMATELY 500 WOODCUTS OF PLANTS. Fifth edition printed by Josias Rihel of what is among the most famous and advanced herbarium of the 16th century, embellished with beautiful woodcuts by David Kandel (1520-1590), his initials sometimes found within the images (such as the author's portrait is signed DK). / This famous herbal is decorated with some 500 hundred woodcuts by David Kandel, the printer's mark on the title, and a woodcut portrait of the author (facing A1). Bock was the first botanist to describe plants in a systematic manner that was based uniquely on his own observations. His aim, as stated on the title-page, was revolutionary: to describe the characteristics and effects of the plants of Germany, a very different study from all previous herbals, which had been concerned with identifying the plants of Dioscorides. He carried this out with unprecedented clarity of expression and of thought: / "Brunfels's herbal had not sold well, and it was probably in part Bock's inability to persuade his publisher to pay for illustrations for the first part of his Kreuter Buch. that obliged him to describe in detail. facts that Brunfels and Fuchs mistakenly believed to have been adequately dealt with by their artists" â" Blunt and Raphael, p. 129. / "Bock is the second of the Germanic founders Botany . . . His descriptions of flowers were remarkably clear . . . he took into consideration elements that his predecessors had completely ignored. He recognized the corolla, stamens and pistils as essential parts of many flowers and he was probably the first botanist of the 16th century to have understood the need for classification." â" Hunt Botanical catalogue. / Many of the artist's woodcuts are imbued with added points of interest relating to each plant. These woodcuts, with the added features, are clustered to the rear of the volume: 2 cherubs under a tree (one is clearly having a bowel movement, indicating this tree has properties favorable to the person suffering from loose stools [f332]); a Nectarine tree with a well-dressed woman [f333r]; a cherry tree is shown [f337r] with a man climbing the limbs to pick the fruit, a young girl waiting below; the apple tree [342r] shows the Biblical snake and a skull, suggesting death from a poisoned fruit; the pear tree depicted on [f343r] also shows a fox or a dog[?], apparently interested in the bird in the tree who drops enough fruit that the animal can eat; a mulberry tr.

4to (158 x 200 mm). (14), CXIX [but: 120, fol. 95 assigned twice] ff. With large woodcut printer's device to final page. Contemporary full vellum on three raised double bands, elaborately stamped with roll tools showing Reformers and classical authors, upper cover titled "Speiszkamer" and dated "1553"; ink title to spine. First edition of this extremely rare manual of popular medicine and the sanitary effects of various foods, with chapters on wine, oil, bread, eggs, vinegar, milk and butter, meat and fish, etc. Reprinted in 1555, the work eventually came to be appended to later editions of Bock's famous "Kräuterbuch". - Hailed as one of the fathers of botany, the Lutheran preacher Bock (1498-1554) represented the transition from the medieval study of plants, with its philological scholasticism and strict adherence to Dioscorides, "to early modern botany, with its demand that descriptions and illustrations be derived from nature" (DSB II, 218). Bock studied at Heidelberg University before accepting a position as educator, physician and alchemist at the court of Duke Louis II at Zweibrücken in 1522. In 1532 he was granted a canon's sinecure at St. Fabian's in Hornbach, where he extended medical care to the population and conducted botanical studies on his long excursions through the region. In 1550/51, now personal physician to Count Philip III of Nassau-Saarbrücken, he laid out one of the first botanical gardens. - Magnificently bound with fine rolls of scrollwork enclosing portraits Martin Luther, Jan Hus, Philip Melanchthon, and Erasmus of Rotterdam ("Martin Lv", "Iohannes Hvs", "Philip Melan" "Erasmvs Rot"), surrounding compartments decorated with rosettes and fleurs-de-lis, within which a narrower roll shows the heads of Julius Caesar, Ovid, and Virgil ("Ivli", "Ovidi", "Virg"), as well as a bull's head signed with the binder's initials "NW" (not in Haebler). The upper cover further bears the work's title along with the date of binding, 1553. All rolls are exceptionally well preserved, their stark appearance emphasized by gilding which has since oxydized. An uncommonly appealing copy of a scarce work: VD 16 lists only four copies in German research libraries. A single copy is known in the United States (Lilly Library, Bloomington, Indiana), while the British Library holds only a microfilm. - Light dampstaining to lower corner of preliminaries; the odd brown spot and stain throughout and a few insignificant edge flaws, but generally very clean. Lower cover somewhat rubbed, the original binding otherwise wonderfully preserved. A roughly contemporary pencil manicule on fol. 51v singles out a paragraph discussing Arcadian wine, said to make women pregnant and men deranged (Bock mischievously notes that such wine appears to have found its way to Germany, as there are plenty of deranged wine-drinkers there who patently have never been to Arcadia). - VD 16, B 6002. "One of the earliest to give original descriptions of plants instead of relying on what Dioscorides or Pliny had written" (Morton, History of Botanical Science, p. 125).Le texte du Kreütterbuch vit le jour en 1539, sans illustration, faute de moyens financiers.

First Edition
Folio. 20 Bl., 369 num. Bl., 16 Bl. Pritzel 866. Stafleu-C. 575.- Vlg. Heilmann SS. 198-203.
