He bought himself out of the army and went to Tasmania (then Van Diemen's Land) and later to Victoria where the gold rush had begun. He volunteered to serve in New Zealand in the Maori Wars and became a pioneer at Tauranga. The edited reminiscences provide a unique picture of how the British Empire was colonised and what life was like in the British army in the ranks. Size: 8vo.
