Er war Schüler bei dem Kupferstecher Georg Paul Busch ( 1756). Bekannt wurde Schleuen durch zahlreiche von ihm herausgegebene Stadtpläne von Berlin. Außerdem stellte er in 29 Kupferstichen Berliner Ansichten dar und hielt in Einzelblättern historische Ereignisse der Stadt fest. Seine drei Söhne Johann Georg (17371799), Johann Friedrich (17391784) und Johann Wilhelm (17481812) arbeiteten auch in seiner Werkstatt. Von Mai 1765 bis Anfang April 1767 wohnte der Schriftsteller Gotthold Ephraim Lessing zusammen mit seinem jüngeren Bruder Karl in Schleuens Haus. Hier beendete er den Laokoon und Minna von Barnhelm.
