There is surface tearing on the front pastedown, but the rest of the endpapers are clean and intact. Covers are very clean and intact except for slight wear to the corners, edges, and front and back outer joints, with the most wear being to the bottom edges. Binding is tight. A Very Good copy. A comprehensive and scholarly book about the public economy of ancient Athens. Divided into the following five major parts: "The Prices of Commodities, Wages of Labour, Rent of Land and Houses, and Profits of Stock, in Attica," "On the Financial Administration and Expenditure of the Athenian State," "On the Ordinary Revenues of the Athenian State," "On the Extraordinary Revenues of the Athenian State," and "A Dissertation on the Silver Mines of Laurion in Attica." Excerpt from the Translator's Preface: "The present translation is substantially a reprint of that which was published in 1828; but I have carefully revised the whole; and moreover, the text has been throughout compared with the original by Dr. Leonhard Schmitz." Some of the changes in this edition include omission of some of the inscriptions relating to the Athenian public economy, a corrected transcript of an ancient stone inscription of a proposal or advertisement for a lease, and the inclusion of Boeckh's dissertation about the Silver Mines of Laurion, which had previously been published separately.

Note by St Clair; includes analysis of payments for public works, and further notes to the rear pastedown of each volume (see photographs). One-page off-print from MAN on Greek mining by Oliver Davies inserted loosely to page 438 of Volume 2. A nice association: St Clair was a leading historian and supporter of modern Greece, author of That Greece Might Still Be Free, and Lord Elgin and the Marbles amongst other works. An interesting work, not common on the market.
